Australia was involved in the Vietnam War because of two main factors; one was fear of communism and the other was due to the ANZUS treaty. After the victory of World War 2 communism was fast spreading, and creeped its way into Vietnam. According to many sources, Australia thought that if communism would continue to spread further south, that eventually Australia would succumb to communism; this was also known as the domino effect and is one of the reason Australia attempted to halt the communism advanced in South Vietnam (History, n.d.). The ANZUS treaty was a treaty between Australia, New Zealand and the United states; the treaty stated that if one of these places would be attacked the other would come to its aid; this also meant that they had to aid each in offensive wars as well. As a result of this treaty when America sent troops into Vietnam Australia also had to do the same, to aid the Americans.…

    Australia on Communism

In an attempt to contain the spread of communism Australia formed more international treaties with what Menzies called the Australians’ “great friends and allies”. Such treaties included the ANZUS Treaty, which was between Australia, the United States and New Zealand, and SEATO, a treaty formed for the protection of South-East Asia. The main reason behind all these treaties was US President Truman’s policy of containment, or the Truman Doctrine. This policy states that the US would help any nation threatened by communism from within or without. Australia wholeheartedly supported the containment policy and so assisted the US in an attempt to stop the Domino Theory. The Domino Theory held with the belief that if one Asian state “fell” to communism then slowly all of Asia would fall like dominoes to communism. Australia was determined to not be just another domino and so tried to stop this fate by using forward defence.…

There is an international public sector. Multilateral cooperation was a feature of the second half of the 20th century, representing a historical reckoning of the nation-state with the growing array of social, political, economic, and environmental issues that affect us all. The composition of this international public sector is varied and evolves; its institutions range from large organizations that are household names, e.g., the United Nations, to smaller regional organizations comprising a few member countries. Areas of broad-based international cooperative activity include (i) political and administrative cooperation; (ii) international justice and law; (iii) international cooperation for development; (iv) regional cooperation; (v) science, technology, and education; and (vi) human rights and…

A key factor to this is Australia’s external stability and global economic conditions; for example the debt crisis in Greece, acting as a potential contagion of global downturn, the US economy’s debt burden is also a negative impact towards global conditions. The key impact however to Australia’s external stability is the attempt of China to slow down their growth due to a high inflation rate of 5.5%, the highest China has seen in 3 years. The slow down in Chinas growth will see Australia’s exports decline, however our terms of trade will be buoyed by the high Australian dollar, seeing the highest level ToT in over 140 years at 85%, which is predicted to last at least 4 years, not to mention the resource boom which has greatly accelerated our growth in the mining…
