The current flag represents a blue ocean which symbolises Australia as an island. The first component is the Union Jack, illustrating the link with Britain being our mother land. The second aspect is the Southern Cross, representing Australia because the constellation can only be seen from the southern hemisphere and is a reminder of Australia’s geography. The Australian flag has become outdated because it is missing important elements that represent both Aboriginals and Australian people. The flag should represent more accurate representation of Australia’s people, culture and land. The proposed design for the new flag includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags, Southern Cross, Union Jack and a kangaroo which have been incorporated because I believe it represents the modern day Australian Identity and the traditional custodians of our land.
