The reason he uses this theme is so he can use it to tell the story, which drives the plot in such a unique way. The protagonist is a lone character in the beginning of the movie as they’ve had a tragic past, for example, losing the death of a loved one, which is then later on used to drive the plot. This element or theme is used in the Dark Knight Rises. Bruce Wayne lost his family when he was just a child, then later on losing the love of his life. As the batman trilogy continues, Bruce Wayne has been avoiding the public for several years because he was put down as a wanted vigilante for falsely being convicted of, killing Harvey Dent. With this issue at hand, and the fact he lost his family and loved ones in the past, Bruce Wayne began to rethink the meaning of life, or why he is living anymore. Christopher Nolan then portrays the protagonist in a way where he or she is surrounded by people who they are close with who showed them their true self. Christopher Nolan also likes to misdirect the audience by presenting a lack of information which he then uses to drive the plot creating a plot twist later on in the movie. The protagonist, Leonard Shelby is a forgetful human suffering from anterograde amnesia. His wife, Catherine Shelby was raped and murdered by an intruder who was shot dead by Leonard after he heard the noises from his bedroom. In the same scene, he was hit from the behind and knocked unconscious, later waking up with anterograde amnesia. Ever since, Leonard has been a broken protagonist until he decides to search for his wife's murderer to get revenge. Misdirection was used to drive the plot throughout the whole movie as it was produced in a reverse chronological order. The plot revolved around Leonard’s unreliable memory and thought he couldn't make new memories, but in reality he was. Nolan switches between using black and white scenes and dark contrast lighting to emphasise a type of noir film which is used to highlight a dramatic effect to the scene. Soon enough, the audience is able to tell why there is an alternation between color and black and white scenes. Every black and white scene that is shown throughout the movie represents what happens before the story told in colour scenes.
