    Jason is a 5 year old student who is currently in Kindergarten at Parkers Chapel Elementary school for the 2016-2017 school year. He has been diagnosed with Autism. Jason experiences difficulty with Reading Comprehension and Social Adaptive Behavior. He receives Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Special Education Services. On Jason’s current evaluations and assessment information, on the Woodcock Johnson IV Test of Cognitive Abilities, Jason’s scored a 90 on for General Intellectual Ability, which falls in the average range.     Many autistic children show minimal emotional attachment, absent or abnormal speech, retarded 1Q, ritualistic behaviors, aggression, and self-injury. The prognosis is very poor, and medical therapies have not proven effective. (Lovaas, 1987) He wrote a detailed article about a study and provided a close look at how the study was conducted. In this study, intensive ABA treatment was provided to one control group of autistic children under the age of 4, but minimal treatment was provided to the other control group. A variety of ABA techniques were used to try and reduce self stimulatory and aggressive behaviors, building compliance to verbal requests, teaching imitation, and to begin teaching appropriate toy play in the first year. The study continued to address significant behaviors over a period of time. When the study was completed, a follow up assessment was conducted and the control group that received the intense treatment had better scores on their IQ tests had higher educational placement, with 47% of them completing normal first grade in a public first…

    Autism is defined as a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts (Miriam–Webster 2012). However, the Cal Fullerton graduate Robert Moran (2012) summed it up best when he stated “I have autism. It is not a disorder or a disease. Ignorance is a disorder and a disease. It needs to be eradicated.” (para 1.). Since the diagnosis of autism has been on the rise since the 1980’s and the current prevalence is 1 in 88 (U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2012).     Autism is a brain disorder that often makes it difficult to communicate and relate with others, impairs the ability to initiate and sustain a conversation with others, absence or impairment of imaginative and social play, stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language, restricted patterns of interest that are abnormal in intensity or focus, preoccupation with certain objects or subjects, and inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals.     Autism is a developmental disability of the brain, much like dyslexia or attention deficit disorder. Autism is not a form of mental retardation, and though many autistic people act like they are retarded, but a lot of times they are very intelligent. Autism is called a spectrum disorder because the symptoms range severity across a wide range of conditions, like the colors of a rainbow. Also some people might be affected strongly by one symptom, while another person might be affect even worse by another. Here are the most common symptoms. Autistic people tend to have unusual sensory experiences. These experiences may involve a sense being too sensitive, less sensitive than normal, or difficulty interpreting a sense. That's why you might see an autistic person trying to avoid being touched. Their hearing and sight senses are also hieghtened, making noises that won't bother normal people drive an autistic person crazy.Autistic also people have a great deal of trouble understanding things in the social environment. If something suddenly happens, like someone starts to laugh or cry, they go into confusion because they are wondering "Why is he/she doing what he/she is doing" and they often panic. Some autistic people may be mute, or may occasionally lose the ability to speak, or need extra time to formulate or respond to questions.<br><br>A good thing is that children with autism can be helped through diet, medication, school and help from parents.
