autobiographical incident
On Sunday, November 13, 1988, I made my first parachute landing from an airplane flying 12,000 feet above ground.

That weekend was very different for my friend Rondon and me. The previous day we left Sao Paulo very early, the city where we were studying our Masters Degree and traveled to Americana, a small town in the countryside located in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

When we arrived at Americana, about 9:00 A.M., we went directly to the Marte camp, an area in the North side where there are a lot of activities relating to flying navigation.

In contrast with the town which was very quiet and calm, the Marte camp was blustering and full of noise. About 500 people, among them instructors, mechanics, flight captains and expert parachute jumpers and apprentices –some novices such as myself. All were preparing to begin parachute jumps.

We found our team, led by our instructor, who was named “Rat.” We joined them. I have taken some courses previously, but never parachuted before. Compared to me, Rondon who had already performed several jumps, was from my point of view, an expert. Brazil is a vast country rich in natural resources and beauty in the continent of South America. Located in the east-central coast of South America, it is the largest country in South America occupying nearly half the continent. Brazil’s topography is vast with its most priceless treasures inarguably being the Amazon Rain Forest. The Amazon River and its components attribute to two fifths of the country with the Amazon Basin making up 40% of the continent of South America (“Brazil”, n.d.). The Portuguese settlers were the first to arrive in Brazil and quickly found they were not alone, discovering the many tribes of natives that called Brazil their home for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years. These Portuguese settlers were not determined to conquer as the Spaniards, but were poor sailors who were seeking items for trade. This made it easy for the settlers to intermarry with the natives as well as the slaves they had brought from Africa, creating the mix of races known in Brazil today (Geographia, 2006). The Portuguese were not the only ones to seek Brazil to escape their situation and they were quickly joined by many immigrants such as French, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, African and Arab, with Portuguese remaining the dominant and official language of Brazil. These cultures have blended into one…

    Fan Lake Trip Report

The bikes pass under the canopy of pine trees and through the line of junior counselors waving bright yellow oars in the air, while the rest of camp cheers us on. Arriving at the dock, one by one we toss our mountain bikes on the ground and join the line of people waiting to perform the ritual belly flop into Fan Lake. The crowd cringes in sympathy as each body hits the water. My heart races when it is finally my turn to jump with my arms and legs spread from the diving board. My stomach aches when I hit the water, but not as much as my legs do from riding 300 miles in a week. Splashing in the lake, I am amazed to have just completed the bike trip that begins the transition from camper to counselor at Camp Reed.…

This film show how much different the Brazilian culture is from the United States. The cities in the movie seem to be very crowded and underdeveloped. None of the people owned cars and they all needed to take the train to and from where ever they were going. In the train it also show the great diversity of the people in Brazil. Dora was very excited to finally get a new T.V. and that was probably her most valuable possession. This shows that the middle class is still very poor and they do not have a very high standard of living in Brazil. Also it is very intriguing that most of the population is illiterate and they have to get some one to read and write letters for them. A final thing that this film shows about Brazil is its massive size. Throughout the entire movie Dora and Josué are traveling to the area that his father is supposed to live in, which takes them days and they are only traveling across a very small portion of the…

After we were all on the boat we had to go through a beautiful inlet that lead out into the ocean. We were then instructed on how put our life jackets and harnesses on. The instructor decided that I was going to be the first one to go up in the air. I made my way to the front of the boat and sat down on the deck so he could hook the parachute to my harness. Without a warning he let the parachute go and then I was ascending up into the air almost felt like the speed of light! As I was going up, he shook the line to scare me. Finally when I reached 500 feet, I could see the shore line. It was a breath taking view. I could see giant sea turtles and I even saw a shark. I was in the air about 30 minutes. Then I started descending down. When I was close to the boat, he dunked me into the same water where I had just moments earlier seen the shark and the sea turtles.…
