autobiography of a bag
I am a blue bag, made in a small factory in Paris that produces exclusive bags under the Silver Star brand. After passing the Manufacturer Test, I was brought into Malaysia by sea. Along with a few hundred of my friends in various shapes and sizes, we were carefully wrapped in tissue and plastic before being packed into boxes.
Unfortunately, I was plagued by sea-sickness the minute I was escorted on board. Nausea and queasiness were my constant companions as the sea vessel rocked and rolled during the tedious journey. It was very hot and stuffy in the cargo hold as well.
My fellow sea farers and I heaved a huge sigh of relief when the ship docked at the Port Dickson
Wharf. We could feel ourselves being hefted, unloaded from the ship and loaded none too gently onto a truck. Our destination was the
Silver Star outlet in Kuala Lumpur. After being unpacked, my comrades and I were beautifully displayed on spotless shelves in an air- conditioned shop.
One day, a young girl from a rich family came in with her mother. Her name was Katie and she stared at me for a long time. It was love at first sight for both of us, and I was sold for RM190.
She brought me home and threw out her old bag.
Katie proudly carried me to school every day. I did not mind the heavy weight of her schoolbooks as she always took tender loving care of me. One day on her way home from school, she accidentally tripped and I was flung into the muddy drain by the roadside. I was mucky and stank to high heaven. I could not even bear the stench myself.
Being ugly sucks as Katie no longer liked me. To her credit, she tried to clean me up but I did not clean up well. Thus, she dumped me outside her house to weather the scorching sun and the drenching rains. Coping with rejection and abandonment undoubtedly was the worst nightmare anyone could possibly experience. I was heartbroken and desolate. The future looked very bleak indeed.
A week of hardship went by before a

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a series of short stories that focuses on the lives of a platoon of soldiers during the Vietnam War, the items they carry; both mandatory and not, and how they deal with the hardships while serving. Of course the items that these military men are required to carry are extremely important to their survival, I have chosen to focus more on the smaller more personal items, most being the emotional baggage they carry.…

After watching a movie about war, or any other scary movies, have you ever imagined yourself in the position of a character? A lot of people make comments like: “I would do this instead of that! Why is he so foolish, and did not run away in the opposite direction?”. I am pretty sure that some of you had reactions like that. We are all different. People react to the same situation in many ways. Some people better in stress, emergency situations, and some are simply not. In the article, entitled “What’s in a Refugee’s Bag? See What People Carry as They Flee” which was written by Adele Peters, people share about possessions in their opinion are important to take with you in case of emergency, or when you have limited time to pack, and you have…

Food provokes lively, warm, jovial feelings for me; this is especially true during the holidays. Baked goods still sparks my olfactory sense and makes me reminisce of Christmas. When I recall these memories I am at my grandmother’s house as a young child. It starts when the oven door opens, vapors of brown sugar waft through the kitchen and the caramelized, buttery aroma with lingering scents of cinnamon. For me, these memories fill me with joy and always evoke a grin. This feeling are even stronger when I recall, in particular, baguettes. My interest in bread became irrepressible at the beginning of my cooking career, and developed into a obsessive urge to create perfection the more I focused on it.…

    1. I choose to 5S my backpack because it had been causing small annoyances in my everyday life. For example, I would spend an unnecessary amount of time looking for a writing utensil, my keys, or wallet. This became a problem when I needed to find these items in a hurry. I also had trouble finding papers (and nametags) I needed in the main part of my bag, because there were many unlabeled folders and papers scattered around.…

I didn’t know heartbreak until June 28, when my dad told me that he had stage 4 cancer. I didn’t know fear until August 13, when I found out that he would have to undergo radiation to combat a tumor in his brain. I didn’t know weariness until August 24, when everyone at school talked about how great their summer had been, and I had to lie and say that mine had been fine. I didn’t know how deep my love for my dad ran until June 29, when I wiped away my tears, stood a little straighter, and vowed to help him find little rays of light in even the worst days.…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…
