When comparing James Cameron’s Avatar with Walt Disney’s Pocahontas, you may find several similarities in the movies; but don’t be fooled, because it is the differences of these two movies that sets them so widely apart, rather than the similarities that supposedly bring them together. Many people seem to have the opinion that Avatar is just a futuristic, visually stunning version of Walt Disney’s Pocahontas but in reality, they are nothing alike as they have two entirely different themes. The themes expressed throughout the movies aren’t the only thing that separates them; the plots are also much unrelated. While the two movies may have the same plot idea, they are carried out completely differently and there are many factors in the plot ideas that tell them apart. Although having a contrasting theme and plot is already enough to prove that Avatar is not just an advanced version of Pocahontas, the character development revealed in Avatar is also entirely original, along with the characters themselves.
“Your weapons are strong, but now our anger is stronger,” (Disney, 1995). Pocahontas is a film about the love of an English man and a native woman who put aside the needs and wants of their families and people, and come together to join as one. The most important theme in this movie is that all of those who are like you deserve trust, but those who are different from you should be rejected. While watching the film, it was plain to see that this movie was meant for children, and there was only one strong message delivered throughout the entire movie. “The strong prey on the weak, it's just the way things are. And nobody does a damned thing,” (Cameron, 2009). This is a quote from the film Avatar, which was released in 2009 by the famous movie director James Cameron, who is known for the creation of the legendary love story, Titanic. James
