Walter Osborne created and sustained a climate of equality, trust and fairness within the Red Tops Dance Orchestra; consequently, the Red Tops enjoyed sustained success over the span of decades. Osborne’s past experiences combined with his intuitive nature contributed to his effective team leadership of the Red Tops. All the principles employed by Osborne are applicable to building cohesive teams in any industry or environment. The most meaningful take-away from Osborne’s team leadership of the Red Tops to me is his steadfast integrity and commitment relative to guiding individual talents toward the goals of the band. I am currently the team lead for the North Dakota Army National Guard’s consolidated property book office. Osborne’s examples…

However, many would say that Belichick has an arrogant personality and his mannerism is lacking the charm of other great leaders. His elusive expression during his accomplishments with the Patriots has made it nearly impossible for the media to adore him as a leader. His personality has had an extensive impact over the way many people perceive his leadership. That same elusive expression is also what sets him aside from others. Author of The Education of a Coach, David Halberstam was quoted saying “But one of the things that sets him apart is the control of the ego. It is used only for the improvement of his team, never for the promotion or celebration of self…that's a very important distinction. He is really the unadorned man. What he wants is respect and that's what he gets…I don’t think it’s fun for him, I think he gets great satisfaction by doing what he believes is the right way to coach with the right emphasis on team and being successful at the [highest] level.” This is a man who truly enjoys what he does everyday and wants to lead his team and other teams to feel the same way he does about…
The book that I read over the summer, La Gran Aventura De Alejandro, is about a young boy named Alejandro. Throughout the book he has many adventures resulting from a magic ring he receives after helping a young gypsy get out of a tight situation. While he is having these adventures, his actions and their outcomes show us that caring for others can make us many friends and help us lead a good life. Also, he shows us that having an open mind and a creative imagination can cause us to enjoy life more.…

The main characters of the book are Reyna and her older sister Mago and her older brother Carlos. She has two half siblings Betty and Leonardo, but they are not as close to her as Mago and Carlos. When Reyna was two years old, her father named Natalio left their hometown of Iguala in Mexico to find work in El Otro Lado to build his dream house for his family. However, two years later her father told her mother Juana, to come to Los Angeles to help him make money for his dream house. Reyna, Mago, and Carlos were devastated that both parents were leaving them in Mexico to go find work in the United States. The three siblings had to live with their father’s mother Abuela Evila. Their Abuela Evila was in my opinion one of the bad characters of…

Described as “dual citizens,” the brass band performers have two drastically different identities (5). Although their performances enable them to be “exceptional icons,” these musicians suffer from poverty. They struggle to earn a living, as they are paid with little salaries. Most of the musicians are not full-time performers; in order to keep the livelihood, they cannot focus solely on their career. During the “New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” Keith Frazier, the member of Rebirth Brass Band, questions that “‘We know who we are. Do you know who we are?’” (100). The musicians themselves have a clear interpretation of their duality. However, there is a confusion of identities from the outsiders’ view. People focus only on their iconic appearance and hardly notice their poverty. As Sakakeeny remarks, it is problematic that the performers are the one who create the brass band culture, while the “cultural economics ends with these same workers, who are the last to receive any financial return” (86). Sakakeeny illustrates several vivid contrasts about musicians’ life stories. That is, the musicians work too much; however, they receive too little. Additionally, their second-line performance exhibits an up-beat tempo and mobilizing atmosphere, while the musicians endure an insecure and tragic life. In order to provide a…
Band has always been an important part of my life, but the teacher who really made it my passion is Mr. Honken. Honken is, to me, a combination of Mangold’s seriousness and Connell’s negligence. Honken has been the most memorable band director yet through his agitation, relaxation, and inspiration. The fact that his original instrument was low brass doesn’t hurt, either. First impressions usually determine the future, but I really don’t remember the first day of band camp, sophomore year, when Honken showed up.…

D-Day was the most dramatic day in World War 2. There are many different theories for the name D-Day but it is just the term that the troops use when it’s their first day of invasion. A lot of people have tried to depict this image but the two most famous movies were “The Longest Day”, “Saving Private Ryan”. There are many similarities between “The Longest Day”, “Saving Private Ryan” and the actual D-Day. But there also some differences between these three accounts.…

Problem solved---- SING, a play, school wide, competition, preparing 3 months, but on stage our lead After preparing for three months it was time to perform our masterpiece. SING 2012 was a school-wide student run theatre competition. It was finally our night to shine and we started our production strong, but right around intermission our lead got sick and could no longer perform. Everyone panicked because we didn’t have understudies. But as one of the student leaders of the team, I knew that I couldn’t let my team down and have all of our hard work go to waste. Immediately, I recalled noticing throughout practices that there was there a shy little freshman, Laura, who seemed to catch onto acting cues very quickly. She was the closest thing we had to an understudy and I knew she had it in her. She was a natural born performer held back by her shyness. I pulled Laura aside and explained to her how much we needed her, believed in her and how much she needed to believe in herself. Tweaking the script to account for the change in actress, the leads quickly ran through the change. The lights dimmed in the theater and everyone shuffled back to their seats or to their places, but I saw Laura starting to get cold feet. I quickly gave her another pep-talk and when the curtains opened, I crossed my fingers and nudged her out onto center stage. It wasn’t as seamless a transition that I hoped it would be, but it did save the show.…
