Prologue

The humans, the two-legs, the no-furs, didn’t matter what you called them, they were gone. Turning around, trying to find his beloved human, Ax turned frightened. There! She was sleeping in her bed, the darkness threatening to swallow her whole.

Ax took a step towards her and when he realized that he was able to move, Ax started racing towards his master, only to notice that the darkness was starting to overwhelm her. Ax jumped around barking, trying to wake his human, . When she didn’t stir, Ax couldn’t resist but take a step towards her. His mind was spinning, thoughts of never seeing his human, never curling up on the couch next to her and watching the magic screen with her again.

We’d heard rumors about former wolf-girls who never adapted to their new culture. It was assumed that they were returned to our native country, the vanishing woods. We liked to speculate about this before bedtime, scaring ourselves with stories of catastrophic bliss. It was the disgrace, the failure that we all guiltily hoped for in our hard beds. Twitching with the shadow question: Whatever will become of me?…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

The wooden house is not visible from the nearby street because it is engulfed by thick forest. The house is owned by Frank Nelson, but many people in town refer to him as “Saint Nick” because he is the Santa Clause at the local church. He is in his seventies and he is a widowed husband, no one in town knows about what happened to his wife because he had moved there after she had died. Though some thought this was weird, it did not raise many concerns around town, but most of the parents feel uneasy about Frank because he has had a bad record with the cops and his drinking…

Whilst Anya grew up, she dared never to sleep without a source of light. She had begged her parents to watch as she fell asleep at night, scared of the looming shadows stretched across her room. As she grew older her parents had decided that she had outgrown her fears and removed her light, her salvation. Anya begged them over and over not to remove it but her voice fell on deaf ears, her parents reasoning echoed again in her head. “You’ve outgrown it Anya! Just try it…please?” They would always say to calm her worry. However as night fell, she hid under her covers and shook with fear, her mind focused on the shadows that would try and steal her away. At the slightest creak in her room, she screamed terrified. She threw her covers over her and ran for the door, only to be inches away before warm hands reached out and grabbed her. Anya thrashed fruitlessly as her parents voices cut through the darkness. It was only her mother and father, worried for her sake and came to check up on her. As realization hit her, she sobbed bitterly in their arms as they soothed her with calming words. They had decided to allow Anya to have her night light back, in hopes of quelling her fear slowly. For a few fortnights Anya slept soundly and happily with her salvation returned. However within one night, her light flickered slowly then shut off. Anya had been tossing and turning, unable to sleep that very night and her heart nearly stopped as the room flooded with darkness. She whimpered softly, unable to call out to anyone for help. She threw the covers over her face, hoping to find some sanctity, a safe haven, for herself. After what had seemed to be hours,…
