Axolotl: The Mexican Salamander
The axolotl, AKA" The Mexican Salamander", is a neotenic salamander closely related to the Tiger Salamander. The Axolotl is classified in the domain Eukarya, kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, class Amphibia, order Caudata, family ambystomatidae, genus Ambystoma, and the species Mexicanum. Axolotls live in deep, freshwater with dense vegetation such as Lake Xochimilco and formerly Lake Chalco. The wetlands of Xochimilco has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 23.7 degrees celsius and an average yearly rainfall of 700 to 4000mm. The axolotl is a predator as well as a prey. It is classified as a seconday consumer. It eats bugs, mullosks, small fish, aquatic worms, and just about anything that they can fit in their mouth and swallow whole. Axolotls are preyed upon by Tilapia and …show more content…
When they do communicate and interact, it is usually for mating reasons. The courtship ritual of axolotls consists of both the male and female nudging eachother and dancing in a circle until the male deposits the sperm and the female collects it. The female will lay the eggs that take 2 to 3 weeks to hatch; producing self sufficient offspring. Axolotls have the adaptaion of regenerating any lost limbs. This is why they are commonly found in science research labs. Unlike Salamanders, Axolotls do not leave water; so they use the feathery structures on either side of their head, which are gills, to breathe. However, if an axolotl spends a long time on land, its gills will be absorbed, so it can use its lungs to breathe. If an Axolotl stays underwater, it keeps its gills. Axolotls are a critically endangered species due to the drying up of Lake Chalco, invasive fish species being introduced to its ecosystem, and the fishing of these creatures. Some solutions to these problems would be to restore Lake Chalco so the species can repopulate faster, and to place a law to limit the amount of fishing that can be done of these

In “The Story of Tellico Dam and the Snail Darter Fish”, a classic case of environment versus government is illustrated. It describes the process in which the Endangered Species Act was passed by Congress in 1973 to bring awareness of species that are on the verge of being extinct and work towards improving their condition. Specifically, this policy states that the “government agencies must do everything it can to protect the animal from extinction.” However, not too long after the Act was passed, the Snail Darter, an extremely tiny fish species, was listed on the Endangered Species list. But, the story gets even more fragile.…

Blindness in the Mexican tetra fish is a controversy among scientists whom have long-debated the mechanism of this evolutionary change. The Mexican tetra fish, Astyanax mexicanus, exists in two morphs: a sighted surface form and a blind cavefish form. The debate amongst scientists is rooted in the process by which the Mexican tetra became blind. Evolution demands progress, yet the blind Mexican tetra suggests regression, as it lost its vision over time.…

    Devil Fish Research Paper

Devil fish, also known as suckermouths, have invaded the waters of the Mexican state of Tabasco. This armored catfish is cherished among aquarium owners because they eat the algea that grow in the tanks, but out in the wild, this behavior harms underwater plant life and erodes shorelines. Along with this, the introduction of these fish has resulted in a decrease in numbers of Robalo, or snook, in these impacted waters. It’s unclear as to how these devil fish became a problem, but it’s thought to be a combination of aquaculture facilities accidentally releasing them, and the “Nemo effect, where the fish grew too large for their tanks and were then released into the wild by. After the initial release, the populations exploded due to their abilities to mature quickly, lay 500 eggs at a time, and their long life spans (7 to 15 years). In an effort to try and reduce the number of devil fish, Acari was born, a company that has attempted to catch and sell these invaders as food. Although this fish isn’t poisonous, marketing it for human consumption has proven to be difficult. In addition to selling fillets to restaurants, Acari hopes to help migrants and refugees through the donation of fish.…

    Armadillo Research Paper

Armadillos have one of the highest rates of expansion being 10 times the active rate of a mammal. I think this is because they came from Mexico and the Southern Americas to America and since they do not have much meat on them, they are able to not be hunted. Also Armadillos had this invasion because of the large rivers and hunters in southern America. The armadillos also moved because of the humans invading them in Texas when Humans would start fires in the prairie grass. This then caused the overpopulation of armadillos in Florida due to no more predators, fires and rail road travel where the armadillo would then sneak onto the train and sneak off in Florida. These armadillo were also brought into Floridian zoos as pets and they would escape that. Also a cool interesting fact is that armadillos can live 20 years or even longer (sucks for the ones on the side of the road). So if armadillos can live up to 20 years or even longer they give birth to 4 babies at a time and they have the ability to delay implantation of fertilized eggs for…

Swim bladders are only found in ray-finned fish or bony fish. In the embryonic stages, some species lose their swim bladders, mostly bottom dwellers like the weather fish. Other fish like the Opah and the Pomfret use their pectoral fins to swim and balance the weight of the head to keep a horizontal position. The normally bottom dwelling sea robin can use their pectoral fins to produce lift while swimming. The cartilaginous fish (sharks and rays) and lobe-finned fish do not have swim bladders. They can control their depth only by swimming (using dynamic lift); others store fats or oils for the purpose.…

I have always been extremely interested in and moved by the scores of endangered species out there. Whether they are plants or animals, I have always been an advocate for the wild life in need. It took hours to pick which specific species I wanted to focus on for this particular project, but after much research and a personal connection, I chose the Panamanian Spider Monkey. Ever since I was a little girl I have had a special spot for monkeys. Before I understood that it was illegal to own one I begged my parents daily to get me one as a pet. Though they could not grant that particular wish of mine, they did get me a substitute. One day at the F.A.O. Schwartz in San Francisco, my mother…
