Often times when someone is speaking to us about the cause of the Civil War, they will give a simplistic answer, such as slavery or states rights. While both of these did have some intake in the cause of the war, there is more that goes into the actual cause. In Ayers What Caused the Civil War, he explains as to why the Civil War is more than a simple explanation; there were problems beyond slavery which caused secession of the Southern states and which in end, divided the nation into two. Ayers states in his article “We should simply refuse to settle for simple explanations for complex problems.” Events that led up to the war, was the acquiring of new territory out west and the passing of new bills, as well as the presidential election of
