The temple overflows with what seems like never ending information on how the Aztecs viewed the world around them. It gives insight as to their religious, political and economic priorities and values, as well as how those three intermingle with each other. The Templo Mayor also gives information on the importance of the gods, Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc to the Aztecs as well as ceremonies, rituals and human sacrifices that were performed at the temple in honour of the two gods. Finally, the offerings and objects which were found in abundance at the temple are significant evidence of the Aztec love of their gods and most importantly, the distance that their power travelled. The Aztecs may have existed for only a short period of time but their history of violence, strength, power and knowledge travelled far and left a strong impact on the world around…
It is 1519 in Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. An Aztec priest is holding an obsidian knife. Soon he will plunge it into his victim's’ chest, which he will rip open to remove his heart. Whenever one thinks of the Aztecs, human sacrifices come into mind. However, besides this bloody practice, the Aztecs were intelligent and resourceful. After all, they did manage to control most of Mesoamerica in less than 200 years. If anything the Aztecs should be remembered as a highly organized and ingenious civilization.…
The American Army had seen hard times during the first two years of the Revolutionary War. They had been the victor in two battles—one in Trenton and one in Philadelphia—but other than that, it had not gone very well. (Background Essay) Because of these struggles, Washington had a hard time keeping his soldiers in the army since many signed up for only nine months and then left or simply deserted. This brings up the question: Would you have reenlisted for the army at Valley Forge? I most definitely would not have because of the illnesses, the government neglecting the soldiers, and the bad conditions that existed there.…
There have been many illnesses and deaths at the camp of Valley of Forge. Soldiers are deciding whether they should stay or leave the camp, but if it were my choice, I would leave. For example in The Diary of Dr. Waldo “Doc C” he states that the soldiers are suffering from starvation and they are feeding off of just water and flour. Also, in their huts there is no ventilation and they have to breathe smoke most of the time. In Dr. Waldo’s point of view, they have been sent there to freeze and starve. To add on, in the Estimate of Illness and Death “Doc A” there has been an illness going around and it has been killing people. Almost 50% of the soldiers had died out of 8,000 people. High risk of death is one of the main reasons I would want to…
Prior to 1492, the Americas didn't have to live to up to any certain religions, they were polytheistic, they believed in many gods. One of these gods was Popol Vuh. He was the ultimate diety. Passage 1 explains why corn was so important to the Mesoamericans, Mayans in particular. Popo helped create the first humans from corn. The inhabitants were very loyal and obedient to the gods. Huitzilopochtli was a god of war, he was ultimately praised for sacrifice. He helped Mexicans find their native capital in Central Mexico. For this he was vastly honored. Mexicans have built huge temples to honor this god of war and sacrifice. From my knowledge I remember that these pyramids/temples consisted of huge sacrifices occurring over a short span of days. This just emphasizes the importance that gods had on pre-conquest Mesoamericans. Life revolved around the gods. We can also see the important role of sacrifice in religion in the 4th and final passage. "..communicated that human sacrifice sustained the gods and maintained cosmic order." Even with everything happening around the, pleasing the gods was always a main priority that still happens to this day.…
Can you imagine 2,300 people killed in one day every year? Or can you imagine spending the whole day farming. The Aztecs empire flourished from 1350-1519 in Central Mexico. The Aztecs lifestyle revolves around agriculture as for human sacrifices only happened once a year. HIstorians should mainly emphasize agriculture because of huge scales, everyday life, and because of clever construction.…
First, killing thousands of people, the loss of people in a loss that can't be calculated (war). Although the Aztecs certainly weren't the first people ever to sacrifice humans, the fact that they did and the incredible number they sacrificed led to the hatred of some of the surrounding peoples. The powerful city-state of Tlaxcala was one of these. Many of their own had been sacrificed, and in the end they joined the Spaniards to fight the Aztecs. It may be that the Spanish simply was an excuse to start what was already an inevitable civil…
There are many aspects of life that one can focus on for a certain population or in a country. Two main aspects of everyday life for the Aztecs were agriculture and human sacrifice. Of course both are highly important and part of the Aztecs society, but with an astonishing 10,000,000 people in the Aztec population, could one really put more emphasize one or the other? This is defiantly a tough question for historians to answer… or is it? To decide on great agriculture or brutal sacrifices, it would have made this decision much easier to choose from if we saw a first person document written by someone that was going to be sacrificed. For three important reasons, greater emphasis should be placed on agriculture: the enormous chinampas were out of this world, the amazing construction of the chinampas, and that it leads to be part of everyday life for the Aztec people.…
When the words “Human Sacrifice” come to your mind, what do you think? To me I think it is abnormal and horrific. Most people could agree with me, but others not so much. Human sacrifice is really popular in the Aztec culture. The Aztecs were the Native Americans who took over Northern Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest, during the 14th through the16th century. The Aztecs were fearless warriors and pragmatic builders. When it came to their religious beliefs, they were very specific in whom they believed in. They had many ways to thank and praise their gods, and one of those ways was through Human Sacrifice. Now there are many different ways to remember the Aztecs, such as their amazing agriculture. But if we had to choose between those two topics, human sacrifice is more intriguing. Historians should emphasize human sacrifice in the Aztec culture because there was an enormous sale that cannot be ignored, the connections to religion, and also the most important factor, the human connection.…
We think that historians should focus on agriculture rather than human sacrifice. Historians should focus on the way the Aztecs farmed. We think that agriculture is more important than human sacrifice because if the historians focus on human sacrifice it only shows that the Aztecs slaughtered people to please the gods. But if the historians focus on agriculture you will see the way they lived and the way they farmed together. The Aztecs worked together instead of slaughtering people to death. This is why think that historians should focus on agriculture instead of human…
Religion was the driving force behind the act of human sacrifice, it is believed that in Aztec civilizations thousands of sacrifices were made yearly. These sacrifices were made in order to appease the gods, as in Aztec culture the root of their religion was based upon the belief that the gods needed nourishment and this was accomplished…
The Aztec actually considered it an honor to have a relative sacrificed. Usually the victim, the person being sacrificed, was treated very well for the day. They were treated with great comfort, and then the ceremony was performed. After a while, however, it became apparent that they were running out of victims. Then they stepped up their war efforts and began to make war on surrounding tribes with taking captives as the main…
Did you know Aztecs sacrifices began in the 1500’s? It played a very important role in their lives. Some people believe that this tribe was just full of violence. Even though they were the most advanced group in their time. The Aztecs did these sacrifices to please their gods.…
I like that you mentioned the human sacrifice as one of the religious characteristics of the Ancient Mayan. For me, if the topic is about Mayan and Aztec, the first thing came to my mind is their human sacrifices. This is the most intriguing, and interesting at the same time, facts in Mesoamericans religious rituals and practices. Historians believed that Mesoamericans were repaying their gods a blood debt for the creation of mankind. Furthermore, one example of sacrifice was the heart extraction.…
The U.S has the highest murder rate of any industrialized country in the world. Does this surprise you? Well, although it is a fact, and most people would think this is unethical. This should also be true for Aztec society. Which deserves the Greater Emphasis? Human Sacrifice, or Aztec Agriculture? I believe historians should focus more on human sacrifice because, even though the Aztecs were resourceful and well organized in agriculture, they were barbaric when it came to human sacrifice. They killed off 2,300 men who were prisoners of war (Doc. D). We have to take into consideration that these sacrifices had families and lives and people who cared about them that were cruelly ripped away from them. The Aztecs could've showed the love and dedication for their gods another less violent way. What the Aztec did to the sacrifices was in-humane. When they killed the sacrifices, they would rip of their hearts, throw the hearts to the shrine dedicated to the gods and let the dead bodies roll down the temple steps bathed in its own blood. Even though other groups of people did human sacrifice, the Aztec were ruthless and held no remorse for their victims. Aztecs sometimes just went to war with another group of people just to capture people and make them sacrifices, called "flower wars" (Doc. D). What the Aztec did was just horrible and I think historians should focus more on human sacrifice than agriculture. There was a humungous scale of sacrifices, as well as spiritual importance, and they surprisingly didn’t kill these people with evil eyes or hatred. The Aztecs hade feeling toward sacrifices.…
