Have you ever had a best friend who was mean to you and argued with you? Vinny and Joe-Boy are both characters in a story called “The Ravine”. They are best friends who live in Hawaii and go to a ravine to cliff jump and swim. There was a boy that died there. Joe-boy and Vinny are different and similar in many ways.…
Kristen Swanson (1991) began her career as an OB nurse and was interested in the effects that miscarriages and death of younger children had on mothers. Swanson and her colleagues began to look at how the mothers handled the circumstances of the death of a child at a young age over the course of three studies done during the 1980’s. What was discovered was that the staff members were able to help the mothers during these periods by showing compassionate care for the patients and the families. Swanson was a student of Jean Watson, who is another nursing theorist interested in the idea of caring. Swanson began the journey of researching caring while at a support group for women that had miscarried a child. The physician that was giving the lecture…

Legendary individuals are rare in our history, but if they succeed their name become immortalized within certain objects or actions. William H. Bonney was a man who did what he thought was just, but he is not remembered by any means. There is no familiarity besides misconception the he was one of the famous robber couple Bonny and Clyde, but his nickname Billy the kid is a name synonymous with such harsh descriptions as cowboy, gunslinger, rebel, and outlaw.(Billy3) No facts are famous about Billy; not even stories of his adventures. He isn’t famous for being a hero, nor a villain. Billy’s fame derives from pop culture references synonymous with the Old west only. His name and reputation have lived…
For the cover, I selected images of events and symbols of events that occurred in Little Brother. The colllapsed bridge represents the terrorist attack on the Bay Bridge that spiraled San Francisco into it’s version of a police state. The bug and the phone awaiting passcode are mental punishments that the DHS inflicted on Marcus when they tortured him into giving them his passcode and continued monitoring him. Marcus constantly wrote code, ratifying the laptop, and showed his love for it with statements like “I never thought I’d be paid to write code,”(Doctorow 154). Marcus was held in a secret prison alone in a cell where he was tortured. In San Francisco, to punish the riotting XNetters, the police would rain pepperspray…
Twenty-three to thirty-four weeks is a small amount of time in order to develop into a fully functioning human being. When these small patients are born into this world they are most likely rushed into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where they address their short development time as well as any underlying medical problems, whether they be associated with their development or not. These patients are our smallest and most fragile, but also some of our loneliest. Many times nursing units within hospitals are understaffed and the nurses simply do not have time to spend just holding or speaking softly to an infant going through treatment. This is where "NICU Cuddlers" come into play. These volunteer groups are starting to crop up in hospitals around…
The decision to go into health care was an easy decision for me. It started with the birth of my cusin, he was born premature. He weighed two pounds 13 ounces; he needed specialized care which was provided by neonatal nurses. Neonatal nursing is a relatively new specialty by comparison to adult health, midwifery, or other areas of nursing. Because it is new, there are great opportunities for nurses to devote their skills to newborns who need specialized care. Neonatal refers to the first 28 days of life. Neonatal care, as known in specialized nurseries or intensive care, has been around since the 1960's (AACN, 2010). I was in awe of how they cared for my cusin. When it was time for my cusin to be released I knew I wanted to be a nurse. With life you never know what is coming your way, I did not pursue the field because life happened got married and had three more children. I did not forget that I wanted to be a nurse just couldn’t get it in my grasp.…
“Her baby woke and began to fuss, but she had no way to feed or change him, no way to soothe him except with the sound of her voice.” I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for a mother that cannot physical take care of her baby. It is such an intimate moment that promotes bonding between the baby and the one that cares for him. The main character’s inner strength shines through yet again, showing us that she will not let her disability define her as a woman or the amount of love that she has for her son and instead of pitying herself she will find a…
As a Child Life Specialist, I inspire to help children and their loved ones cope with challenging experiences in the hospital. Helping children in need is one of my passions in life. A unique approach to helping the children is by building a bond with the children and families. Building relationships with the family and patient reduces anxiety and develops trust. I believe I have the responsibility to protect children and families in the hospital, respect all customs and values of the individuals I work with, and communicate effectively with patients and team member’s to ensure quality care. I do my very best to make the sometimes overwhelming and stressful hospital experience into a positive learning experience for the child.…
Ethical, moral, and even spiritual values inform nursing practice in a labor and delivery setting. A common nursing value, for example, is the emphasis on improving the quality of life’s experiences rather than simply “fixing problems” from a strictly medical perspective. This can have major implications for how the birthing experience is approached before, during, and after the actual period of labor and delivery, and places both the patient and the nurse in a much different total context than one that is simply medical. Besides, as a labor and delivery nurse, we also serve as patient advocates, which is enhanced by our cumulative knowledge gathered through years of experience. As educators, we normalized the birth experience and served as coach for the patient, her partner, and family members as both interpreters of medical information and procedures, as well as, providing advice that assisted in normalizing the birth experience. Other values can have equally important implications for how the nurse perceives and approaches her work, and simply having values implies a level of importance and respect that is brought to nursing practice that is not always present.…
I soon learned that this family was unique, everyone excluding the father had a grocery list of ailments and disorders. The oldest son had autism and sensory processing disorder, while the middle child could speak, but had recently become mute. Then there was Jackson. He was born at 24 weeks gestation, spent his first 6 months in the NICU, and developed neurofibromatosis a skin disorder that causes discoloration of the skin and growth of tumor along his nerve endings. After a week working with the family, I began questioning what I had done accepting a position I was clearly unqualified for, but being the determined woman I am I continued on. I spent most of my days working with Jackson, learning his medical needs and how to best care for…

I never imagined that one little, tiny human could change my life. I know they say that the second you see your child, you’ll experience a love that you’ll have experienced before. Although I didn’t have a child, the birth of my little sister sure allowed me to experience this love. At the ripe age of 13, I was beyond excited for my mom to have a baby. While I already had two siblings, they were closer to me in age. I was finally going to be able to take care of a baby, and there was nothing that I was more excited about.…
Going through life, we as humans face many obstacles and conflicts. Some thing change a person's perspective and some things don’t. This something changed my life so suddenly, it wasn’t until recently that I realized how big of an impact it had made on my life. As a little kid you don’t understand the big things that go on in the real world around you. When I was four I was adopted. I was taken out of the poor, underprivileged part of Phoenix, AZ, and was given a new life and new opportunities.…
