Some web standards and guidelines for improving your website are:
• Accessibility
• Usability
• Design
Accessibility in web development is focused on users with disabilities. Users that have impairments such as speech, visual, auditory, physical and cognitive rely on web sites to be designed with them in mind.
According to W3C the web accessibility Initiative (WAI) has created documentation on how to make the content of a web site accessible to those with disabilities. The web page should include text, images, forms and sounds working together for the content of the web page.
Using these components allows browsers and media players or other assistive technology (examples; screen readers, scanning …show more content…
software) to allow a disabled user to view the web page by means to accommodate their disability.
W3C has evaluation tools to assist the web developer in validating their web pages to assist in creating web pages that meet the standards for accessible web pages. (W3C.org)
A website should enhance the users experience by creating usable web sites.
When planning a website one should know what audience they are creating the web site for and collect data for planning and designing it.
Ways to Measure Usability
The web site should be easy for users to learn the interface to accomplish easy tasks.
Efficiency is also a key in making the site usable. How fast can a user accomplish tasks?
Can the user effectively remember the interface when they return to the web site or do they have to learn it again?
How often are users encountering errors and how serious are these errors. How long does it take the user to recover from these errors?
Last but not least, doe the user enjoy using the web site? (Usability.gov) When designing a web site the web developer must factor in the different types of web browsers that will be viewing as these can create user-interface issues.
The web developer needs to follow guides for creating a web site: (Usibility.gov)
• Provide engaging and useful content
• Understand and establish the users requirements for the web site
• Ensure that the format of the web site can meet users’
needs o Navigation – should be clear – layout and style are important o Content – clear and engaging
• Provide feedback for your site for improvement from users
• Provide mission statement for site
