Bach's Distaste For The State Of Contemporary Music
This distaste for the state of contemporary music becomes more evident in the form of commentary towards the last measures of the movement. As the whirlwind that reached out to the past until Bach approaches to the present, it loses its strength. The texts demonstrate irony towards the broken relationship between composers, performers and audience. The first tenor begins a monologue that alternates between introducing the other singers and the conductor, quoting texts in German, what is an allusion to the Darmstadt, and reciting fragments from Beckett. The outline of this broken narrative reveals Berio’s commentary about the music of his time.
