Back to the Dreamtime

Based on the short story “Back to the Dreamtime”, I would like to write a journal about the relationships of the two main characters. Two main characters that I choose in this story are Richard and Tom. This is because there are many things that Richard and Tom doing together. Richard, a teenage Aboriginal boy raised in white Australian society, is compelled to come to terms with his past by forces outside his control. He was adopted by the McDonalds. His father died when he was two years old. Tom is a his brother. Richard and Tom very close even though they are not biological siblings. Their relationship also are very good and friendly to each other. In this story, there are many things that they do together. Firstly, they always spent a lot of time together. This can be seen when they usually sat beside the railway tracks before going to school every morning. Besides, this also can be seen during the break,Tom, Richard and also their friend, Bradley left the school grounds secretly to go to their favourite place just down the road. They usually sat near the edge of the cliff and enjoyed watching the surfaces battling the waves and coming off second best. This show the closeness of them. This also can be proved when Richard, Tom and Judy were playing cricket in the backyard on the weekend. They have same favourite pastime on the weekend and this can make they strengthen their relationship to each other. Other than that, their good relationship also can be seen when they work together to clean the attic. They spent the whole day to tidy the attic together. They move the trunks and boxes to the back wall to give some free space near the door so that they can move more easily. This show the spirit of partnership in the family relationship between them. Moreover, Tom is very kind and responsible person. This is because he always want to help Richard when Richard have a problem. This can be proved when Tom want helps Richard solve his problem about an Aboriginal carving that similar to the one of his father left behind before him died. This can also be seen when Tom offered himself to accompany Richard to Alice Springs and helped him to complete his mission. Tom also think when he can go with Richard, their parents would feel better because Richard don’t went there alone. This can show their relationship
