Background Research Music has an overall effect in listeners, with heart rate being one factor among many that music influences. When a listener's brain hears the tempo of a song, his brain sends signals to the body that cause breathing to either accelerate or decelerate, matching the tempo of the music. At the same time, the listener's heart rate speeds up or slows down. The listener's brain and body pick up on both the tempo and rhythm of the music and the heart beats to match them. Humans and songbirds are the only animals that can do this meaning us humans are wired to respond to music. Heart rate is mainly affected by music. Music affects your emotions which affect your heart rate. Your heart rate betrays your emotional status. Researchers have discovered that positive emotions such as love and appreciation, as opposed to negative emotions such as anger and frustration have a particular heart rhythm that is more coherent. Music affects many things that lead to a difference in heart rate, the main one being emotions. When listening to music, it triggers activity in the nucleus accumbens, a part of the brain that releases the feel-good chemical dopamine which is the same chemical produced when eating great food and taking drugs. When listening to music, you use both sides of your brain. People who study music tend to use both sides if their brain more, making them better at lateral thinking and creative problem solving. Listening to music engages your hippocampus, the bit of your brain that handles long term memory storage. That’s why when listening to a song, you can connect it to a memory. Even patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia have recovered their memories through listening to music. Whether we realize it or not, music affects us in all different ways. It can calm you, excite you, make you sad, and make you feel every other that there is. Music is a big part in our lives. It

    There have been countless studies performed to understand the complex correlation of the complicated brain and music. For example, in a study performed by Mark Tarrant, David Hargreaves, and Adrian North, the men sought to examine the manipulation of the mind based on music. In the study, they played music in a gym and examined the moods through testing their subjects immediately following their workout. They offered the participants the ability to help out a charity, thus examining the affect that the music had on them. They measured two different groups, those who listened to annoying music and those who listened to uplifting music. The results revealed that the uplifting music did in fact manipulate the mind by causing the subjects to be more supportive, while the people who listened to the annoying music were short-tempered and unhelpful.
