Backyard Farming
We all live in a society where food is "fast food" and everything we eat pretty much comes in cans and frozen bags that are full of preservatives and other chemically enhanced fillers to make it look "fresh". As a society we have come to a point where we do not have enough time to cook our own food so we decide to either do fast food or canned food; essentially we spent insane amount of time in our "youth" making money for retirement but we sacrifice our health by eating essentially junk. Come retirement time we are sick and tired, so now we spent all our hard earned money spending it on doctor visits and medications. When we moved to the United States from America, we were thrilled, the only thing we noticed was a little hard was that the food we got here was either full of preservatives or not fresh. In Saudi Arabia where we grew up the food was fresh, the produce was locally picked and you knew the farmers that brought in the food to the supermarkets. The poultry and meat too was fresh, you got to the market pick one and they will slaughter and prepare it for you. After a few years of living here in the states my parents decided to do their own vegetable gardening to produce the vegetables that they most commonly use in their daily food. The idea of growing their own food because they wanted to eat locally and organically, and they could save money in the long term seemed fantastic and so now we have a very healthy backyard with the essentials for our daily use. Now with the government shutdown and the economy back in the droop. People are looking for ways to squeeze their budget and reduce consumption in general, not just at the pump; though the gas prices seem to be dropping. The cost of everything else seems to be on the rise these days, especially at the supermarkets, a trip you cannot simply skip. By growing your own food
