Bad For Children

In the essay, “School is Bad for Children”, John Holt concludes that students learn better by themselves and with other students instead of going to school. In the beginning he explains how a child is excited to learn and discover many new experiences at school. When the child enters school, the first thing the teacher teaches is that “learning is separate from living” (72) and that there is a certain way to learn. Holt gives many reasons why school doesn’t teach children the right way to learn and gives many solutions on how to improve these problems. The two solutions that were the best are to let children explore the outside world and to let students learn from each other. I agree to Holts ideas because it will help children make their own decisions, or express their thoughts, make them more independent and will let children experience the outside world without being inside four walls every weekday but I do not agree to his idea of eliminating the attendance system. One of Holt’s solution is to eliminate the school attendance. His reasons why the school should do this is because the attendance system no longer does what it purposes was, which is to protect children from hard labor.
