Infosys Consulting in 2011

Innovative Business Model Infosys Consulting (thereafter IC) is a new, fast-growing consulting firm under parent company Infosys Technology Limited (thereafter ITL) base in India. Infosys Consulting has 700 consultants by 2011 and they provide consulting services worldwide with a focus on entrepreneur technologies. Infosys has two valuable business models: Value Realization Method (VRM) and Global Delivery Model (GDM). These two models have been IC’s key differentiators during the recent few years. GDM is an older method used by IC. IC is the first among the consulting industry who started to practice such model. Each consulting project is staffed with 1 IC-based consultant, 1 ITL-based technical employee and 3 IT employees. This helps to bring together both strategies and technologies. However, managing director Raj discovered that GDM could be further developed to a better model. Then comes to the valuable VRM.
VRM is an approach to realizing client’s measurable business value through transformation programs. The best way to understand VRM is to connect IC’s initiatives to enlarge shareholder’s value. This behaves more like a “back warding” approach of to discover initiatives. For example, if shareholders’ goal is to generate as much free cash flows, then the company needs to increase revenue and reduce cost. Then going back to operational level, IC will detect the level 0 to level 4 business processes. Then based on the objectives and levels of processes selected, specific solutions will be applied, such as improvement of ERP platform or digital marketing. A big selling point of VRM is the target timeframe IC designed to reach the desired process metric. And then following the processes, IC was able to deliver measurable business value to clients.
Comparison to Traditional Consulting Firms IC can differentiate from competing consulting firms by using VRM and implementing cost-efficient solutions. Traditional consulting firms

First and foremost, VDS’s newly devised incentive plan for PDM employees falters because it ignores the reasons underlying the division’s problems. VDM has found that clients repeatedly buy the PDM software, but do not install or learn how to use the complex system, costing VDM potential profits since the consulting and training provides 80% profit margins. In order to address this problem, VDM management changed the incentive program to reward only consulting activities. Not only did altering the incentive system act as a punitive rather than incentivizing measure, as employees were accustomed to the previous incentive program that was based on PDM sales rather than consulting services, but also it closed up dialogue between upper-level VDS management and PDM managers.…

The Indian ICT Industry has witnessed excellent growth in the past two decades. Capitalizing on its advantages of talent pool, lower cost of operation and the innovative remote delivery model, India has established itself as a global leader in the ICT sector. Today, India is clearly acknowledged as the global services hub. However, the industry today is facing many challenges in terms of rising costs, availability of quality talent pool, security and IP protection and infrastructure concerns. This coupled with changing customer expectations and emergence of other low cost locations is further deepening the threat to the Indian ICT industry. To sustain the growth and achieve global leadership, the Indian ICT industry needs to move from being a low cost service provider to a high end solution provider. The industry needs to provide innovative solutions of higher value to the global customers. This innovation need not necessarily be in Products but could be in Services, Processes and even Business models. Innovation will lead to exponential growth and help the industry break out of the linear business growth. The success of such innovation will be far reaching and help us achieve global leadership quickly. For this, we need to create a culture or innovation and an ecosystem to nurture and encourage entrepreneurs. The Government, Industry, Institutes, Investors and other stakeholders need to come together to create such an ecosystem. While Innovation will lead to global competitiveness, growth and leadership, such growth needs to be equitable and broad-based. The growth should reach the tier 2 and 3 cities and shall not be limited to the major cities. The ICT industry’s growth should also touch the society - both rural and urban through technology led transformation solution. The ICT should also…
