In The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt, Holling Hoodhood is known as, “the Son Who is Going to Inherit Hoodhood and Associates,” his father’s business, by his sister. This greatly affects his life and personality. At the end of October Mrs. Baker and Holling are discussing the character of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. “‘Someone who wants to become who he’s supposed to be,’ I (Holling) said. Mrs. Baker considered that. ‘And why couldn’t he?’ she asked. ‘Because they wouldn’t let him. They decided he had to be a certain way, and he was trapped.
