To find out the difference of reaction time it takes for the baking soda when it meets the vinegar under the condition that the volume of the vinegar changes.
Background Information
The two reactants, which are baking soda and vinegar, react with each other. Then it creates product, carbon dioxide, water and sodium acetate. The chemical name of vinegar is ethanoic acid and baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate. To illustrate this phenomenon as a chemical equation, it can be shown as C_2 H_4 O_2+NaHCO_3→ NaC_2 H_3 O_2+H_2 O+〖CO〗_2. The observation of chemical reaction was bubble creation with fizzing sound.
Research Question
How does the volume of vinegar affect the baking soda creating the reaction?
Variables
Independent Variable Volume of Vinegar (ml) Using cylinder to measure the milliliter of 4ml, 8ml, …show more content…
12ml and 16ml by looking at gradation. Then pouring into each film canister.
Dependent Variable Time the lid takes to pop up after pouring vinegar (s) Start a timer right after pouring the vinegar into the film canister. Then stop the timer immediately when the lid pops up.
Controlled Variable Mass of Baking Soda (g) Using a measuring scale to make the baking soda to be same every time.
The mass will be 2g and will be put into each 4-film canister. Size of container
The size of container could affect the result so we need to put vinegar and baking soda in same container, which is film canister (can contain 30ml of liquid) Type of vinegar Different type of vinegar can bring different reaction time so I need to use same vinegar. I used the vinegar, which called, “White vinegar”.
Type of baking soda Using same type of baking soda, which called, “Baking Soda from nature”.
Hypothesis
If the volume of vinegar increases, the time the lid takes to pop up right after pouring vinegar will decrease. Due to the fact that the volume of the reactant (Vinegar), which stimulates another reactant (Baking soda), increases while the reaction happens, the time it takes for reaction will decrease.
Materials and equipment 1 Digital balance Four film canisters (30ml) 50g of baking soda 300ml of vinegar 1 Timer 1 Spoon 1 Cylinder (50 ml) 2 beakers (300, 600 ml)
Procedure
(1) Wear the lab coat and goggles for safety on
lab.
(2) Then set up all the equipment like the picture above. Measure 50g of baking soda by putting it into the 200 ml beaker that is on the measuring scale then press the start button to make 0g, and pour 300 ml of vinegar into another 600 ml beaker.
(3) Measure 2g of baking soda by putting it into the 200 ml beaker that is on the measuring scale. Then put 2g of baking soda in each four containers, which is called film canisters.
(4) Then, measure the vinegar to become 4ml by using 50 ml cylinder.
(5) Pour 4ml vinegar into one-film canister and close the lid quickly as soon as possible.
(6) As you pour the vinegar into the film canister, start the timer.
(7) When the lid pops up into the air, then stop the timer and record the result.
(8) Repeat (3) ~ (7) with 8ml, 12ml, and 16ml of vinegar.
(9) Clean all four-film canisters.
(10) Finally repeat the step (2)-(8) for four times.
