Ballade Analysis
Before the contemptuous contemporary ensemble began playing the first song, they explained that it would be played and performed using a multiphonic technique with the saxophone. This was explained before the group began playing to get some background information on the composer and how the song would be played. The piece started with the dynamics of the song being loud or forte. The percussion began with a repeated beat and then a loud, long hold note of the saxophone. In between the playing of the drums and saxophone there was a stroke of sound by the cymbal. As this continued the tempo was andante. Then it would change again from andante to Allegro. There were some parts of the song that would sound more alive and it had a consonance feel, …show more content…
Ballade: The first movement started with the bassoon and the percussion. Then there was some plucking of the cello strings with an adagio tempo. Then the guitar and woodwind instruments begin to play and they sound similar to other instruments playing. The tempo of the song is adagio and the dynamics sound quiet and soft or piano. Then this changes and it starts crescendo with all the instruments playing together. The music sounds like folk tale or like the Mulan movie, such as having water drops and it is calming. The song dynamics change again and the music begins decrescendo as it fades out. Here is where I thought that the song was over but it continues on. It began with the woodwind instruments and bouncing the cello stick on the strings. This was a weird way of playing but I enjoyed seeing …show more content…
I did not know what to expect. I had not been to any classical music performances before and I did not know what was going to happen or how long it would be. I was happy to go to the concert because it is very close to my house and I was thankful I did not have to drive far away. I thought the concert would be more of a formal type event but I was surprise that it was pretty relaxed and casual. It was pretty fun and laid back. When I first arrived, the space was much smaller than expected. I thought the concert would have taken place in a bigger theater but it was a small stage. Which was okay because the performance felt more personal and I was able to see what was going on because I was closer than I would have been in a larger place, however at one point where I was sitting I was not able to see only hear what was being played. The concert was fast and brief. There was no waiting around for it to begin. It had a lot of interesting things that happened when the music was performed that I had not seen or heard before like the performance of the Flowering, composed by David Macbride. This was the first time that I heard someone play a song on flower pots instead of just banging them to create noise. Everyone there was dressed pretty casually however, there was one audience member that I saw that was wearing a suit and tie. The audience was very quiet and respectful. Toward the end of the performance there was a lot of audience

It appeals to performers and audience by beginning with a energetic maestoso. At measure 9 a low brass figure leads into the first statement of the flowing, lyrical theme 1 in the clarinet and baritone voices. A measure 30 the rest of the woodwinds join in the melody. Around measure 53, Swearingen somewhat layers more and more voices of the band into this piece. At the end of this piece they finish with a strong coda section in ABA style composition.…

This movement for the most part seems calm and peaceful. It seems to have two parts prior to the middle of this movement. The first part has cellos and violas and the second part has clarinets. Then the full orchestra plays. Once you get to the middle of this movement you can hear the woodwinds play. At the end of this movement it seems to go back to the main melody theme played by the full orchestra.…

The famous main melody, introduced after a few counts of quarter notes from the lower instruments, is played and repeated by the upper instruments three times with slight changes each time. During this melody, it can be difficult to play the notes short and precise while maintaining the delicacy. It then completely shifts to a moving section with chromatic eighth notes from the upper instruments that through crescendo and decrescendo with the lower instruments playing an interesting part in between repetitions. Eventually, it switches back to the main melody until the song ends with a rich long tone from the lower…

Unity in this piece of music is illustrated through the steady and fixed beat that can be heard playing at a similar dynamic all through the song. The whole piece of music has three main sections, that is from the beginning to 1:19, secondly from 1:20 to 2:19 and lastly from 2:20 to the end. Unity and the admixture of timbre in the piece have been created through the first and last part of the song being played by a brass instrument, while the second part being dominated by the…

The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light. The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound. This piece made the audience feel excited and eager to hear more because many of the audience members recognized this…

The music turns triumphant and joyful and is set at a happily content moderato tempo. A third theme is introduced during the coda which does little to tie the piece together for a conclusion, instead it provides a sense of confusion. Instruments seem to be conversing back and forth looking for which direction to go. A second recapitulation of the first theme clears up any uncertainty and brings the symphony to the ending it was searching for. The return of the original melody in its minor key provides a grim finality, punctuated by a few additional forte notes to give the piece an absolute feeling of…

The concert I went for was Steven Wilson’s concert and it took place at Rogers Arena. The genre of Steven Wilson’s band was in Rock genre and was on…. Steven Wilson was from Britain and this was the first time for him to have a concert in Vancouver. There was one drum, two electric guitars, one electric piano that were on the stage, the lights were flashing with different colors during the entire concert which made this concert more memorable. The synthesizers and the sheet music were on the floor that looked natural in this performance. The audience were so excited and they were patient while waiting the concert to begin. Some of them wore the T-shirt with Steven Wilson on them which showed they were a big fan of him. This concert ties with…

There were language and style uses which were unfamiliar to me and my curiosity was quick to analyze. I listened and concentrated and enjoyed every aspect of performance. Though an orchestral accompaniment/performance would have been nice, the end result of enjoyment was sufficient. Part 1 was a bit mellow with the operatic style but Part 2 of the concert was more upbeat and had me moving in my…

This music was very relaxing and easy to listen to. It was interesting because I actually was sitting with friends who are not even in Music foundations this semester, and one of them is a violist and got called out by Dr. Kim for being an excellent viola player. My sister is a violin and viola player, so I have grown up going to orchestra concerts of hers, but it was amazing to hear high quality/professional musicians perform live. The emotion and feeling they put into their playing was spectacular and they each had their own way of expressing themselves in their playing. Somehow, this group of women is able to meld these emotions in harmony to make the smaller group even more entertaining than a large orchestra. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was glad to have the opportunity to enjoy higher class music in the comfort of my own campus.…

Overall I thought the concert was solid in terms of its technical aspect. The main limiting factor for this performance was its lack of money to spend on big, extravagant props and set, but I believe the plain stage and costuming fit the band well. I especially enjoyed the lighting due to its ability to aid in controlling the mood of the audience. Although it was a rather simple production, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and appreciate the technical details even more because of the new wealth of knowledge I have gained during the…

Please turn them off before the concert begins. Refrain from unwrapping candy or cough drop wrappers during the performance. (If the composer wanted the sound of crinkle paper noise, they would have written it in the piece.) During a performance, you should never eat or drink. Just imagine sitting by someone chewing and drinking loudly. You would want to leave wouldn't you. While the concert is in progress, there will most likely be silence in some pieces. These are called movements. You would want to clap, but don't clap. A good way to know if it is a movement is if the conductor's arms are still up in the air, or if his/her back is turned to the audience. A good way to show appreciation during a performance is to applause. Even if you didn't enjoyed the music that was played, you should still show respect and appreciation to the performers. Sometimes the audience will show more appreciation or enthusiasm for a good performance by standing while clapping. This is called a standing ovation. It would be more respectful to join and stand up even if you didn't think…

In the concert, there were tons of observations I made. The regular things that occurred would be that they slurred and articulated the B flat scale before every piece they played. Then, they had trumpet solos and a baritone solo in between a song. The baritone solo was magnificent, as the intonation and tone was spot on! I noticed how every player was wearing the exact same clothing starting from socks to shoes. This way none of the audience were distracted. Also, there was good body movement with the instrument, so it looked appealing as they were playing the instrument at the same time. While on the other hand, some unusual awkward things I observed that there were instrument players in the four corners of the audience. Surprisingly, a lot of…

Last Saturday, I attended the All-Region concert at Berkner. My family and I arrived 20 minutes late, but surprisingly came right on time to watch the beginning of the high school concert. In the end, I was surprised by how short the whole concert had felt. One minute I was hearing the orchestra perform and the next we were on our feet clapping. Now, as I try to actually remember the concert, the first piece was not as memorable as the second and then third. They played with energy and the endings were always emphasized, but I guess the middle to me lacked being the same uniqueness. The second song was short and pretty, and I can still remember the soli that the violas had, so that was amazing. Burning the piece, I was simultaneously laughing…

This movement is broken down into four sections by tempo: Adagio, Allegro, Lentement, and Allegro. The Adagio section begins with a slow introduction at a mezzoforte dynamic. This section is in a major key and set in quadruple meter. It has a wide range and an ascending melody. There are brief cadences and the section grows in a crescendo. The loudness and energy of this section holds the attention of the listener and creates a proud and joyful mood. The Allegro section begins at a mezzopiano dynamic level, and is in triple meter. This section is played in a major key, and is largely conjunct in movement. The melody has an ascending shape as it moves in a crescendo. The fast tempo of this section creates an exciting and energetic mood. The Lentement section has a slow pace and is played in a minor key. It is homophonic and in duple meter. The tempo creates a smooth and relaxing mood. This section features a decrescendo and is conjunct with a relatively narrow range. Finally,…
