An individual’s perception of belonging evolves in response to the passage of time and interaction with their world is shown through Baz Lurhmann’s dance film Strictly Ballroom and in Tim Winton’s short story neighbours. In the film this is shown to us through Fran mostly as she interacts with Scott to become a professional dancer through their ups and downs. And also is seen in Shirley…
This particular event happened during lunch time. Some of my classmates had finished eating, and one in particular, Nick, had decided to play with some of his friends around a tree stump. Nick, being the troublemaker that he was, decided to mess around with the tree stump itself. He kicked it, and his buddies laughed. They all started to mess around with it.…

Last week was a very sad deaf table for all of those involved. For seniors, it was thier last deaf table before they gradated, and for me it was the last deaf table neccessary to fufil my languge requrement. But that did not meand we did not have some fun. Bob of course told a funny story, about an interpretor who had to intrpet for a pastor who loved to use play on words in his sermons. Unfourtunatel fopr tyhe intepretor, this is very difficult to translate. So, what she did was sign that he told a joke, and that they should all laugh. Bob, who was young at the time and all of his friends, died laughing, and had no idea what ws going on. A lot of the girls sitting with us JUlia. Blaire, and Leah were all interpretors and they laughted and…
“An individual’s interaction with others and the world around them can enrich or limit their experience of belonging.”…
Everyone wants to belong somewhere, but sometimes when we actually do belong to a particular world or group, we find it a struggle because our sense of belonging is actually quite superficial. A person has a need to be attached to a certain world or place. Belonging is based on conforming and complying with these different worlds or places. It is imbedded in our nature to seek both attachment and independence. Scott Hastings, the protagonist in Baz Lurhmann’s 1992 flamboyant and stylised film Strictly Ballroom often struggles to belong to the insular, claustrophobic and gaudy ballroom dancing world because he only wants to belong on his own terms. perceive this in Baz luhrman’s ‘strictly ballroom’ and the short film ‘ Paris Je t’ aime’ .…
During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…
It was a typical late summer day in my life; the all work no play world of Tanner Simons. Ok, maybe a slight exaggeration but seriously while other kids are swimming, playing in summer basketball leagues or hanging out. I am held captive forty-five miles from the nearest town. I get to spend my summers helping out on the family ranch. We have a lot of creek bottoms that require crossings. Over the years equipment has grown in size. On this particular day Dad decided we needed to replace some culverts with bigger ones. This will cut off a lot of miles and hill climbing with the stack mover. I am the youngest of six kids and was eager to prove what I could do. There were two crossings to dig out. I would start with the one by the corrals down below, about 2 miles south of our house. I drove the excavator down and began playing in the dirt. Did I mention that it was a hot afternoon and just the drive down was miserable? I moved on down the creek about another mile and a half and dove right in digging out the other old crossing. My brother came down to get me on the motorcycle and we headed back up to the house. I was feeling quite proud of myself and my accomplishments of the day. I was relaxing on the computer enjoying the air conditioning when my Dad and sister came in too. They had been moving cows and had went down below to put in the new culverts. Dad wanted to know why in the heck it took me all afternoon to dig out one culvert. I told him I got them both dug out and he said not to kid him, he was hot and tired! A heated argument happened before we finally figured out that I had dug out the wrong crossing! It is funny now but having to go back down and dig a third culvert that same afternoon was not funny at…
When the Framers of the Constitution set out to create a government, they made sure that one of the fundamental principles underlining the government would be the separation of powers. This separation of powers outlines the numerous powers and functions of the government by dividing them into separate independent levels and branches of the federal government. The Founders believed that by creating separate branches of government, it would help limit the powers of the national government and prevent tyranny. Therefore, the legislative branch has power, under the Constitution, to make laws. The executive branch, headed by the President, executes or carries out laws. Last but not least, the Constitution established the Supreme Court to head the judicial branch, which interprets and applies the law in federal court cases.…
I was babysitting with three other high schoolers and I was told that there are normally more kids that attend but the night that I was helping there was only four kids. There was a dinner before and they had spaghetti and cookies along with milk or juice. It smelt really good but I had practice before so I was not able to attend the dinner. I did end up getting a cookie and that was really good. After the dinner when the meeting started we were able to go into a teachers room and play with the toys or stay in the gym and shoot hoops or run around. The little girls decided they wanted to go into the room and I was more than happy to go in there and play games. Girls are normally more my thing. Nathan came with and helped, we played hangman on the board and “house” that didn't last very long. One of the girls wanted to play “teacher” so she gave me and Nathan a spelling test and by that time it was time to go. I had a lot of fun playing with the little girls. I took one-two hours out of my night to help the parents of the kids so they could focus on the meeting and not worry about what their kids were doing in another room. When I was little my mom was in PTO and I still remember when high schoolers came to help and I hope they remember when they are my age. Knowing that I was making a difference made me want to realize the importance of helping the…
One time my cousin had to go hunting with me. He didn't know how to hunt so i taught him to. But is wasn't going to be easy. So here we go. He asked me if I ever had been to hunt. I told him I have been hunting my whole life. He didn't know that i have been hunting my whole life because we don't really talk to each other that much. He was really happy that i decided to teach him how to hunt. He did not have a father to teach him how to hunt. I felt really bad for the kid because i don't know what i would do if i don't have a father to grow up with.…
The thing that really caught my eyes and the way I felt was the selfishness of the students that were their. In addition to this, one day as the lunch bell rang and as the students are racing to win the front spot in line, I took my time simply because my mom made me lunch. As I was eating, I noticed a kid next to me with no food, so inside I felt bad and so I offered him my whole entire lunch. The funny thing is, the very next day at lunch time, guess who didn’t have food this time? Yeah me! So sitting their expecting the same kid I offered food too the previous day to give me some of his, he doesn’t even bother looking at me.…
In my setting a child came to me crying and told me that a child has made him upset by snatching the ball of him at lunch time. I called the other child who had made him cry and asked him why he snatched the ball of him. I explained him he should not snatch a ball or anything from anyone he must ask kindly. The child did not pay attention to what I had said to him and continued to do snatch things from other children. I then decided used the doll puppets to demonstrate the children that snatching things from other people can make them very upset and especially when they are your friends. I questioned the children that is it nice to make your friends upset. The child who had made his friend cry he apologized to his friend as he realized what he has done wrong with his friend.…
I choose to do my observing at two very active locations, just because I wanted to observe a wide variety of different people in two totally different situations. One was at the Harem nightclub in downtown Lansing, and the other was at GoWorkout, the gym I workout at. The reason I say two totally different situations is because at the nightclub most people are intoxicated, most are single, young people, out looking to have fun and let loose, and potentially find love or companionship. On the other hand, at the gym, there is no alcohol present, the age range is from 16-65 years old, and most people are there to concentrate on working out and getting there bodies in shape, and some are there to compete.…
