Question #1) Using the four I’s – issues, institutions, interests and information – that characterize the nonmarket environment, develop and analysis of the fast food industry using McDonald’s as your primary focus. The four I’s of the nonmarket environment include issues, institutions, interests, and information. Together these four I’s are the backbone and structure. They work independently as well as together in order to accomplish this. We will use the fast food giant McDonald’s as an example to better portray how important the four I’s are. Let’s begin with issues. One example of an issue that McDonald’s faces is obesity of consumers. Some activists groups fault McDonald’s for not providing consumers with nutritional information of the menu items, as well as not providing healthier menu options. Next will come institutions. McDonald’s was accused of using beef from cattle that had been improperly raised. To address this issue McDonald’s adopted new standards for its beef suppliers, including minimum space standards for cattle in feedlots, due to being targeted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). As for interests, McDonald’s has special interest groups that pursue issues because of the benefits that accrue to their members. Its goal is to be a successful corporation that provides quality products to satisfied customers. Lastly, comes information. Unit 1 established Sustainable Use Guiding Principles to govern their use of antibiotics in food animals due to concerns raised by the public. Each of these aspects, the four I’s, plays an important role in the success of McDonald’s. It helps to ensure that concerns are handled efficiently and properly so that consumers are happy.
