Albert Bandura
Albert Bandura is associated with the Social Learning Theory. Bandura states behavior is learned from the environment through the process of observational learning. Unlike Skinner, Bandura believes that humans are able to process certain information that allows us to think about the relationship between our behavior and the consequences that follow. He argues that children observe the people around them behaving in several ways. He validates his statement by conducting an experiment known as the bobo doll experiment. In this experiment, Bandura tested 36 boys and 36 girls from the Stanford University Nursery School aged between 3 and 6 years old. He wanted to see how aggressive they were towards the doll called bobo after watching a short video of an adult punching and kicking bobo. He observed the children in the nursery and judged their aggressive behavior on 5-point rating scales. The results were that the children who observed the aggressive model made way more aggressive responses than those who were in the non-aggressive groups. This ties to society today. In society, children are surrounded by many influential models, such as parents, characters on TV, friends, teachers at school, etc. These models provide examples of behavior for children to observe and imitate.
