A Persuasive Essay Assignment

Final Essay due March 24th

Throughout history, books have been the target of censorship. At times, these books are even banned from schools and public libraries because the content in them is thought to be too offensive.

For this assignment, you will be reading one of these banned books. Which book you read is your decision, however you should keep in mind the appropriateness of your choice- make sure it is a book that your parents would not find objectionable.

After you have read the book, you will be writing a persuasive essay defending whether or not the book should or should not be banned from a middle school library.

Your essay should include a paragraph that summarizes the book as well as three logical, defendable reasons why the book should or should not be banned from a middle school library. While you may look up the reasons why the book has been challenged in the past, the thoughts expressed in the paper must be your own.

You are expected to use the information about persuasive essays learned in class to format this paper. A rubric outlining the expectations will be posted on my Teacher Page. Your essay must be typed and follow the standard requirements for an essay: double-spaced, Times New Roman, one-inch margins. Any secondary sources or research that you use must be documented with in-text citations and included on a Works Cited page.

If, at any time, you have questions regarding the book you are reading or the essay you are writing, please ask

So no I do not think that this book should be banned or even should've been challenged it is an all around amazing book. I loved everything about it and I think it is a catastrophe that it is banned in some schools. If I was to talk to the person who banned I would first make them give a very good very valid reason. if that wasn't good I would see if they would unban the book. This mainly because of how amazing the book…

Although this novel may offend some parents or kids, others enjoy this novel. If some do not approve they have the option too put it aside and not read it. Adults should not take the fun, adreniline rush, sappiness, etc., away from others. I do think that this novel should be read in High Schools because it shows what it means too be self-sufficient and it also portrays that if you really want soemthing then you have to work for it. This novel is very touching and has a good moral behind it. I think that banning this book is unfair to others. You should be able to read whatever you want, whenever you want. If others are offended they don’t have too read it and cans et it aside and leave it at that. I think that the novel was very interesting, it was also very well written. It made me think about my life more and how well I have it and how much I take it for…

Almost four hundred years later, books are still being banned based on the fear of information. People of religious backgrounds question books which preach atheism, and fear for their religion. Parents question books which detail graphic or adult themes, for fear of their children’s innocence. Fear has been the primary motivator of literary outlawing for centuries, and it encroaches on our right to information to this very day. As Claire Mullally points out in her article ‘Banned…

    Why Do Books Be Banned

Not all books that are banned should be but there are some that I see good reasoning for why it has been banned. In my opinion the book I read shouldn’t be banned, but I do see why some readers feel that it should, in the book there is some violence that might be disturbing to a young reader. Also to some young readers they may find the book to be scary. Even with these other points I am still against banning this book and many other books. I encourage anyone who dislikes a book or finds it inappropriate to think about their decision before challenging or banning a…

The Catcher in the Rye. The Scarlet Letter. Huckleberry Finn. Harry Potter. The Diary of Anne Frank. Animal Farm. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Da Vinci Code. The Grapes of Wrath. These literary classics have been vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents (Banned Books). These great novels both teach important values and educate children about world affairs and classic themes. Unfortunately, each of these novels has been banned at one point in time. In a country where freedom is so adamantly advocated, it is a wonder that an issue like censorship would even come up, that such a controversy would sink its claws into the minds of states’ boards of education across the nation. Censorship is a needless restriction placed on developing minds that need the morals and values that banned books can give.…

Books are banned when someone makes a formal complaint about a certain book, which causes someone of power, like a librarian or principal, to remove it from its location (put it in the back of the library, take it out of the class room, etc.) Books can be banned for containing swear words or sexual content and for talking about people of color, religious minorities or…

Before getting into detail about the books itself it is important to look at book censorship as a whole. Book censorship is considered a controversial topic a lot of times because it is part of the First Amendment and is considered as intellectual freedom. Intellectual freedom has had schools taken to court because students and parents believed by the school board not allowing certain types of books it was violating their First Amendment rights. Many times the courts do favor to the students because the school boards are responsible for the education provided at the schools but can not allow books to be banned because they do not agree with the ideas or opinions portrayed. Reasons for books to be put into question are profanity, violence,…

The Harry Potter series, Huckleberry Finn, Alice, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Grapes of Wrath and Moby Dick. These classic pieces of literature have been vital to teach values and morals, but have all been censored at one point in time. Censorship is the process of banning types of media as a result of so-called “objectionable content”. Many other pieces of literature have been censored throughout public libraries and 85 percent of these instances go unreported. Censoring books is not helping children more though restricting them from important knowledge. Censorship is wrong for at least three reasons. First, books with controversial ideas help children to better understand various issues that they will most likely face in the real world. Second, censoring books is…
