Banning Vending Machines
Fast food has become an inter-continental meal. Recently, the popularity of fast food has spread to school canteens, colleges and universities. Nowadays, it is believed that junk food is the origin of many health and behavioral problems among students. I believe that the sale of such food through vending machines on campus should be banned.
There are several reasons why selling junk food on campus must be stopped. The consumption of fast food by university students has increased greatly over the past years. Students no longer have breakfast or lunch at home. Most of them find home-made food a waste of time or tasteless. They use much of their pocket money to buy snacks that are rich in oil, sugar, fat and salt instead. As its name shows, junk food is all types of food with very little nutritional value. Most students, however, do not realize that what they are eating is the source of much of their behavioral and health problems. The sugary and fatty food such as, potato chips or chocolate bars contains a huge amount of calories which cause hyperactivity and poor concentration among a lot of students during lectures. This unhealthy diet explains, in part, the relatively poor academic performance of a big number of students. Another reason why fast food should not be sold at on campus is that the poor nutritional value of junk food has contributed to the increase of many diseases including obesity and high blood pressure. It is rare to see students taking out a home-made snack from their sandwich bag or a bottle of fresh juice that can give them just enough energy in order to be active and concentrate during classes.
On the other hand, a big number of people strongly believe that it is extremely difficult to stop selling junk food on campus. For one thing, it is difficult to replace vending machines by restaurants that can sell fresh healthy food. Besides, I believe that junk food has become a part of modern lifestyle. Students as well as most university teachers are often too busy to prepare a healthy, fiber-rich snack to have during recess.
In conclusion, because of the negative effects of junk food on the behaviour, performance and health of students, it is clear that we should think seriously about stopping its sale through vending machines. In my opinion, although many people have become addicted to fast food there is always a way to replace it on campus and elsewhere.

The only entity fast food restaurants desire is money. They do not care about health, weight, or medical problems. Fast food is everywhere, also “ there are more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America. More than fifty million customers are served per day” (Zinczenko 464). These statistics are outrageous and embarrassing for Americans. The food these companies produce is horrible in nutrition and damaging for one’s health. Even though fast food is tempting, one should stay far away from it as possible. In David Zinczenko article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” he has his own personal experience as an example for people, specifically teenagers, to stay away from fast food. Although fast food produces delicious products, these products contain blinding nutrition facts, and the companies mainly target teenagers.…

The Food Court alone is packed full of unhealthy yet appealing options such as Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Chinese food and Quiznos. Aside from the food court, there are also several coffee shops offering pastries and small hut-like stands offering energy drinks and candy bars for those on the go. For the students that reside on the campus, as well as any others who decide pay the absurd fee, can eat in the dining hall which offers more nutritional food options, as well as the food being freshly made. In order for students to perform well in class, the body needs certain nutrients, which the current dining options on campus to not provide conveniently or economically. “Relations are what matter most, and the health of the cultivated turns on the health of the wild” (Pollan 292). This quote derived from Michael Pollan’s essay on Polyface farms illustrates that the junk food people in today’s society are ingesting is not only negatively affecting one’s own health and those around them, but the animals we are ingesting as well. Pollan displays how everything eventually in one way or another ends up in a cycle. So if we are buying incredibly cheap processed food, our livestock is eating even more…

I asked my friend Danny Trinh in the Worcester Dining hall, “Why do you eat Pizza and Fries often, when you know that it is unhealthy?” He replied, “That’s all they have.” He said, because of the disgusting food, such as the red bean burger, he began leaning towards the good tasting unhealthy food. So what influences young adults and their food choices? Hebden states, “Taste was the most important influence on food selection, followed by convenience (availability), cost, nutrition/health value, smell and stimulatory properties (alertness).” Students like to lean towards food that tastes the best, therefore ignoring the health aspects which can impact them long term. It can be concluded that services should provide low-cost nutritious food that tastes good.…

With approximately 17% of children between the ages of 2-19 being obese, why are we allowing our schools to provide vending machines that are full of junk food to our children? The fact is, schools are terribly underfunded and the vending machines offer them a profit stream they need for their budget. Schools are using the profits from the vending machines for after school activities, computer, school programs, etc. The problem isn’t really the vending machines themselves; it’s what is being put in them. Sugary soft drinks, candy bars and chips are the leading sellers in these vending machines. Since most vending machines in schools contain foods that are nutritionally empty and calorie dense, the kids routinely eat these junk foods. Making poor food choices can lead them down a path to obesity, diabetes and other health problems. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.…

It is safe to say that students want to have all eating options accessible at their fingertips. By taking out vending machines, and fast food spots, students will be outraged. In the article “Fast Food and Soft Drink Corporations Should Be Banned From Public Schools”, we can see that it doesn’t work. When students are given limited options, they will seek other resources regardless if they are not available to them on campus. If you were to ban this, then students would just go to other schools, which would definitely lower the enrolment rate. Once this happens, then you will need to seek other ways to make students pay. This can all be avoided if we just allow students to be able to eat and drink what they want…
