It would be in Barrack Gold’s best interest to have Ernesto Ayma occupy a high managerial position because it would contribute to their “localization” strategy of its Bolivian subsidiary. By hiring locals to work for their Bolivian subsidiary, and occupy high positions, Barrack Gold would show the people of Bolivia that they are not there just to explore the natural resources of their country, but they can help improve the Bolivian economy, and contribute to increasing the living standers of the locals. Making the Bolivian people more acceptable of their operations, which might not always environmentally friendly.
Besides gaining the affection and support from the locals, having Ayma occupy a high managerial post in the company would mean that the company would have to take less risks in the future, and potentially be more successful. I would recommend Barrick Gold’s top executives back in Toronto to keep supporting the idea of “localizing” their subsidiary in Bolivia, as it could be contribute for their success in a foreign country, and maximize their productivity with the support of the locals. Barrick Gold has to ensure that their expatriate managers understand the details of the Bolivian culture, as it is not similar to the Canadian culture.
