II. Brief History
During the spanish regime the town of Bato is little bit like a sitio between the boundaries of Two ancient towns of Matalom and Hilongos. In the middle of this Sitio is a land by the sea about 10 heatares in size, where grow in abundance large hard wood tress such as Tugas, Narra and Apitong. Along the sandy shores grows abundantly the ambayong plants which give the name of the locality as Kalangaman. The original settlers of Barangay Kalangaman are Bibera, Germano, Sembrano and Sagrado.
As the years passed pioneers from Bohol and Cebu Island attracted by the fertility of the land. Begun to settle in the weeded areas, using the hardwood trees for their houses and buildings. The people grew in numbers and the locality was renamed Kalangaman due the presence of many different kinds of birds in the weeded locality.
When the Town of Bato, Leyte was formally created in the year 1886, Sitio Kalangaman, being the geographical center of the Municipio, became the hub of the town. Years passed and the town grew in size and the number of inhabitants increased. Many of the residents came from different towns grew provinces. Trade and Commerce was very favorable and the town financially and politically. The present Kalangaman was created in 1973 by the decree of President Marcos (P.D.86- PD 86B).
