In the beginning of Barbara Tuchman’s This Is the End of the World: The Black Death it is said that “Genoese trading ships put into the harbor of Messina in Sicily with dead and dying men at the oars” (para. 1). This was the very first spreading of the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague continued to spread across Europe, Asia, and even Africa. Of course, in order for the plague to spread from country to country and even continent to continent foreigners had to be the blame. As for the European settlers, they brought with them to America an unknown disease that killed many of the Indians. The Europeans had become immune to the disease, but it was new for the Indians, which is why it killed so many of them. Besides high rate of death and being brought on by foreigners, these two cases of pestilence still have more in common. Another thing the black death and the settlement of America have in common is they both lasted many years. The black death last for five years (1347-1352). As for European’s taking over America, that has lasted over 100 years. Even though Indians are no longer dying from a disease brought over, there numbers are still being reduced.
