Barco Case Study
Problem Statement: In the light of the recent development, Barco has to decide which product amongst BD 700, BG 700 and BG 800 to introduce.
Analysis : Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures. After the recent introduction of 1270 Projector by Sony, all the plans and projections of Barco have gone awry and moving towards the development of BG 800 seems to be the best option. The SWOT Analysis below illustrates the same :
Development of BG 800 – SWOT Analysis
Strengths Weaknesses Oppurtunities Threat
Can help Barco Maintain its Market Share. Strict Deadline to Meet. Market for Projectors expected to grow @ 8.5 % and for Graphic Projectors @ 40%. Fujinon does not agree to supply lens.
Better Product than Sony 1270. Exhausted Human Resource. BG 800 can be a market leader and a new industry standard. Sony Components stop supplying 8 inch tubes.
Can save Barco from losing 75% of its forecasted 1990 profits. Sony starts a Price War.

BD 700 : One of the three options is to continue with the development of BD 700 considering the fact that the company has already spent a lot of time and money on its development and orders had started pouring in already. This is a digital upgrade of BD 600 but in terms of performance it does not match with Sony 1270. It will not be able to compete with Sony 1270 in terms of price, BD 700’s tentative price is 16000$ and the Sony 1270 is expected to be priced in the range of 15000$~20000$. If Barco goes ahead with the production of BD 700, it will have no product to match Sony 1270 either in terms of performance or price and 1270 will make a dent not only in the Data Segment but also in the Graphics Segment.
BG 700 : It has a 7 inches tube and will suffer in performance when compared with Sony 1270 on various parameters :- light output, Picture Quality and Resolution. It will get very difficult for Barco to market and sell this product, it might have to resort to price war with Sony which will only dent the bottom line.
BG 800

The market for these two products is highly competitive and Metrovox relies on product differentiation as a source of competitive advantage in both Europe and North America. The retail price is the same as, or slightly higher than, their competitors. Product uniqueness is based on the size of the Bugabyte and the storage capacity of the Terabyte Lite. The Bugabyte is a relatively new product on the market and was designed to meet predicted future growth in popularity of hand-held video devices. Demand is anticipated to be low to moderate for the first few years of sales and expected to grow thereafter. The Terabyte Lite has been on the market for over six years under a different product name. The casing design was recently changed to compliment the Bugabyte. Marketing efforts within the last few months have striven to address the fact that this is the same quality product with a new look. This product experienced healthy growth for its first four years and has stabilized over the past two. The Terabyte Lite will not contribute to significant revenue growth for Metrovox, although its presence in the market contributes to brand continuity and awareness.…

In response to Sony’s low priced and high performance 1270 projector, Barco should continue with its scheduled BD700 and accelerate development for the BD800. Though the BD700 is the first digitally controlled projector with scanning frequency, it still would not be as competitive against Sony’s new model 1270. Therefore, Barco will have to launch this product with a significant price differential from the 1270 so that customers will be discouraged from upgrading. Their ultimate short term goal should be for buyers to purchase their moderately priced BD700 version over the more expensive Sony 1270. That is not to say they should create a price war with Sony, but merely defend their market share within the data segment.…

Barco launched its first projector BV1 (scan rate of 16 kHz & priced at $11,250) in video segment in 1982. But soon Barco decided to enter the computer applications market and by the end of 1983 launched BD1 (scan rate of 16 to 18 kHz & priced at $13,500) in data segment. In 1984 Barco introduced two more projectors BV2 (scan rate of 16 to 18 kHz & priced at $9,875) and BD2 (scan rate of 16 to 25 kHz and priced at $14,750) in video and data segment respectively. 1985 saw the entrance of Sony in the industrial projection market with its 1020 video model. 1020 was slower compared to Barco's video projectors available at that time but it had a sharper focus indicating a better quality tube. In 1985 Barco launched BD3 (scan rate of 16 – 32 kHz & priced at $17,000) and then in 1986, Barco introduced BDHR, its first projector in the graphics segment (scan rate of 16-45 KHz and priced at $17,375). In June 1987, Barco came up with BG400 for graphics segment (scan rate up to 72 kHz, initially priced at $25,000 and later reduced to $24,000). ECCO has a unique competitive environment and holds a distinct advantage from it 's competitors. Most of ECCO 's competitors are "branded marketers", who do not produce most of their offerings, they brand and market them. These competitors include Clarks, Geox, and Timberland, along with indirect competitors such as Nike and Adidas. ECCO is not a branded marketer, but uses a fully integrated vertical value chain where they produce many of their own materials. ECCO makes nearly all of their own products in different countries, but in their own facilities unlike competitors.…

Finalizing our thoughts regarding reducing Sony’s cycle / lead-time ends with recommending testing the simplified process at one of their smaller production factories. Go achieve full functionality; I forecast this process to be fully operational at this one factory within 1 - 3 years of testing. With the assumption that minor delays and challenges may arise, this timeframe will more than likely be shortened once implemented at other production factories. Furthermore, this time will include the span consisted of newly negotiated terms with supply chain partners, if needed, to ensure full clarity and communication along all ends of the supply / value chain. As all of these objectives are being completed, the payback period…
