Throughout this course we have examined and studied six musical periods: medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, and impressionism. Of these periods, my favorite would have to be the baroque period. The baroque period lasted from 1600 until roughly 1750. Outside of music, there was a large amount of change occurring in the arts, society, and popular culture throughout this time. During the baroque period, music was transformed by the development of several new genres. Baroque music was unique in the characteristics of mood and dynamics throughout the pieces in this time. My favorite musical piece from the baroque era would be Johan Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg concerto No 5 in D Major, First movement Allegro (1885-1750). This piece is similar in some respects to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, first movement (1756-1791) from the classical era.

The first movement of Mozart’s piece is in sonata form. In sonata form, there is an exposition where there is a theme presented, a development in which the theme is modulated, a recapitulation where the these return, and then the concluding coda section. The prominent feature of Piano Concerto No 23 is the piano solo. Mozart’s piece has no basso continuo. The change of mood throughout Mozart’s piece is a key development of the Classical Era. In my opinion, Mozart’s Piece contains a wider variety of tempos and timbres compared to Bach’s piece. One thing that is consistent within both pieces is the sense of movement and musical energy. Moreover, both pieces involve a whole orchestra and then a solo by one
