For example, a child from a poor family background might have a goal of going to medical school and graduating with a medical degree. But in this case, the barrier could be financial. Likewise, a person moved from his country to another country for work. He found difficulty in understanding his colleagues who speak a strong regional or national accent. Each client is an individual, and it is important to form a therapeutic relationship so we can care for each specific client. Each client has his/her own needs; just because two people are of the same culture, it doesn’t mean that he/she believes in the same thing. In turn, nurses need to understand their own culture and beliefs before caring for a person of a different culture or beliefs. In our research, we chose four peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles found though the Lambton College data base (CINAHL). We began with a search of cultural competency and then narrowed the search down through specific cultures which are within the Sarnia Lambton area.…

We as part of the health care team need to understand all cultures in order to provide holistic Nursing care. Being culture competent is more than just knowing what each culture traditional norms are, it is knowing one’s own beliefs and values and being able to put these aside when providing care. Since each culture and religion perceives diseases, treatments and value of life differently we as nurses need to make sure our care is delivered around these. By tailoring when possible our interventions to respect their culture we also help to gain their trust. Some challenges faced by community health nurses are related to cultural diversity. Community health nurses must be willing to accept and recognize cultural and language differences, which can become barriers. A possible solution could be the use of an interpreter when dealing with diverse patients, who cannot speak English very well. Also, employers can help to ensure that nurses are trained to be more culturally diverse and learn to be more competent in other languages (Omeri, 2004).…

The United States is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world. Many people of different customs and religions share the same space. Yet, the healthcare workforce does not represent the nation’s diverse population. Physician Assistant (PA), specifically, still remains predominantly white. According to the 2013 annual report from the National Commission on Certification of PAs, 85.6% of certified PAs indicated they were white. Given that diversity matters to healthcare and treatment of patients, many minority groups still experience health disparities despite the overall improvement in the healthcare system. Being an American of Vietnamese descent, I want to be a part of the nation’s movement in making PA become…
