Near the end of the book, Ishmael intended to expose Barry of his act of bullying, but in the end Ishmael didn’t as he felt sorry. However, shortly afterwards, Barry threatens Ishmael and continues to act like a bully. Wide-broom hats usually symbolises primary school students and in this case, they are the target of bullies like Barry. Barry Bagsley is portrayed as a bully in the novel, who mainly targets weaker people. An example of this took place in chapter 11, where a grade 4 boy, Marty got bullied and got his hat taken by Barry Bagsley.
This proves that Barry will pick on people weaker than him to make himself feel superior; he will even stoop so low to even pick on a child. Although, this only shows Barry’s cowardice as he can only make himself feel superior by bullying people who don’t have a chance against him.
The wide-broom hat also symbolises the innocence of children and just as the wide-broom protects a child from the UV rays of the sun, it is also a protection barrier for them.
