Bartleby Reading Reflection Assignment 10/9/2012

I met this kid named Josh in my Calculus class the first week of school. Josh is tall, has jet black shaggy hair, very pale skin, and really big ears that stick out through his hair. But what mostly distinguish Josh from others are his very blue eyes. Josh never speaks in class, even when the teacher asks him for and answers. One day in class, I needed something to write with and he was willing to give me a pencil. He seemed to be a cool kid but he never said a word during class and I barely saw him outside of class. One day at the cafe, I noticed Josh was sitting at a table in the corner by himself. I went over and asked if he wanted to sit with me

Riordan Manufacturing is seeking a new system that will consolidate all of their Human Resource related data. Currently, the data that will be a part of the new system is spread out through different departments of the company. The new system will allow this data to be saved in a central location, while only allowing viewing access to certain employees. The access will be much the same as currently in place, but located in a single system. Lastly, the implementation of the new system will be not be a quick process, because it would be safer the company completes a test run to few end users before completely releasing the system. Reflection. I feel that the capstone 01 unit is very different to all the other subjects I studied at the Swinburne university so far. Activities that I contributed and are yet to contribute seems very interesting and significant in some ways both to my education and social knowledge. I am placed in a group where there are students from different nationalities and ages. In my opinion I believe that being able to actively participate in such a diverse group will definitely encourage me to sharpen some of my study techniques.…

To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, narrates an unbiased, non-filtered, and innocent viewpoint from that of Scout Finch. If the novel were to be rewritten from another’s perspective (such as Jem’s or Atticus’), the main concept of the book would be altered. The narrative of Atticus Finch would influence less of an impact; his knowledge and experience with the town of Maycomb would weaken the depth of Tom Robinson’s case. Just like Scout’s—Jem’s outlook would also call attention to the problematic practice of racism. However, his sense of understanding the immorality of it is more mature than her. His narrative would seem biased; which insinuates that Harper Lee would have written To Kill a Mockingbird to discriminate against racists.…

Herman Melville wrote the short story, Bartleby The Scrivener, in 1853 at the age of thirty-four. Melville writes this short story during the Industrial Revolution era, where Wall Street was booming and the economy was changing and shifting rapidly. At this particular time, Herman Melville had just finished writing another short story that was astonishingly criticized by fellow writers and critics. Melville felt that humanity had mistreated him just for the sole reason that they could not fully understand his creativity. In the aftermath of this condemnation, Melville decided to write this particular short story. Bartleby was hired as additional help for a Lawyer as a scrivener. During his first few days on the job, Bartleby “did an extraordinary quantity of writing. As if long famishing for something to copy… he ran a day and night line, copying by sun-light and by candle-light” (Melville 1091). Overtime, though, Bartleby started “preferring not to continue working” (Melville) and ends up becoming valueless to the Lawyer. Bartleby never actually refuses to work for the narrator, but by the end of the passage, the concluding outcome ended up the equivalent. The Lawyer feels obligated to work with Bartleby because he sympathizes with him and does not fully comprehend why he has “preferred not to work” (Melville). Eventually, the Lawyer undergoes a transformation during the passage, leaving his positive affections toward society at his office door. Melville uses this transformation as a commentary on the negative aspects of his society.…

I have had few classes in the past that gave me an overview of how to research and find creditable sources. In this class I learned not only how to research but also how to use my research in my academic paper. It was interesting to find more sources to use within the University of Phoenix Library. This course showed me a closer look at how I can use different sources to find creditable articles. This course gave me different way to keep track of what I want to use in my paper. One of which is the annotated bibliography. Annotated Bibliography help me understand exactly how I wanted to do my essay and which part of my resource I wanted to use in my essay.…

During a period of depression and eye problems from 1853-56, Melelville published a series of stories. Melville exploits Bartleby's infamous remark "I would prefer not to" to reflect his protesting attitude toward his meaningless job. Secondly, Melville gives attention to Bartleby's actions, and his constant coexistence with the inescapable wall. As a final method, Melville once more supplies you with Bartleby's actions involving his imprisonment and concluding suicide. It is through these three literary techniques of establishing character that Melville is able to constitute the idea that an insignificant job in a capitalistic society will produce an alienated worker. Herman Melville's, "Bartleby the Scrivener" is a story that takes place on Wall Street, peopled by workers of a common mold. The message that Melville intends for the reader is how society has little tolerance for social deviance. Herman Melville relates the story of Bartleby, the telling of a tragic story sprinkled with humorous subjectivity, the actual story line, through its progression should determine its categorization. For this reason, Bartleby the Scrivener is a tragedy. Throughout the story, Melville relates the many troubling incidents experienced with the mysterious copier.…

    Alcoholic Authors

The prominence of alcoholism in American literature, at least in the first half of the twentieth century, and the relationship between great authors and alcoholism has become somewhat of a literary cliché. Icons such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, and Jack Kerouac are as famous for their work as they are infamous for their drinking habits. These authors have created a legend out of themselves just from their notorious habits of drinking. Of the seven native-born Americans awarded the Nobel Prize in literature, five were alcoholics. The list of other twentieth-century American writers also affected with alcoholism is very long. I researched these authors’ lives to find out how they all were infected with the same disease, alcoholism. Some said that drinking boosted their creative abilities, while others thought of it more of an escape from the confines of their own imagination, to which they were bound for all hours of the day. Drinking does fit the loner lifestyle that many of these authors had. It was viewed as a cure for writers block, an escape from their own minds, and most importantly, as a tool to cure the emotional hardships that they endured. It is not a coincidence that the greatest writers and artists also had very troubled childhoods and adult lives. Look at Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Van Gogh; both were both severely troubled emotionally and depressed, and yet they still produced artistic and literary genius. So what is this connection between alcoholism and the great authors of the early 19th century? I will take an in-depth look at a few of the most influential alcoholic authors, such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, and Tennessee Williams. I will look at factors that may have led them to their alcoholic habits, such as their childhood, troubled lives, or depression. From there, I will then look at how alcohol affected their works, positively or negatively. And as we all know, alcoholism was also…

Written in the late 1950s to early 1960s, To Kill a Mockingbird in many ways reflects the state of its society. The Civil Rights Movement was occurring at the time, a fight for human freedom, extending the rights of full citizenship to individuals regardless of race, sex, or creed and the slowly emerging concept of equal rights for all. Although set in the 1930s, it has come to my attention that the book strongly mirrors it¡¯s context and was greatly influenced by the values and beliefs of the people at the time.…

The Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck’s portrayal of the social aspect of the Great Depression that also gives his philosophical belief on Humanism. His story is of the people and for the people. He shows the love and compassion people are capable of during hard times. Unlike The Fountain Head more than one character in the book represents the author’s beliefs, and the characters aren’t so single sided. Reverend Casey and Ma Joad and family, are the embodiment of Steinbeck’s ideas that during that time everyone has to help each other in order to survive. They help other people every chance they get. Casey says to Joad and Muley(insignificant character), “I gotta see them folks that’s gone out on the road […] They gonna need help. They gotta live before they can afford to die.” Casey is driven to lift every ones spirits in order to improve on the collective of mankind. Casey’s thought that everyone’s spirit is connected and that we thrive off each other is called the Emersonian Concept of the Over Soul, wherein we are all one huge entity of the soul, good, and bad. This idea denotes the possibility of God yet is still a spiritual type of belief which is. There is no individual sin or virtue but what people do and don’t do. Jim Casey had another good quote “Fella gets use' to a place, it's hard to go," said Casy. "Fella gets use' to a way of thinkin' it's hard to leave." Its amazing thinking about the sheer numbers of people who were homeless then. I can only imagine losing my home like that and roughing it out in the elements, going to bed hungry, worrying about taking care of my family. This book helped me understand the magnitude of the situation more clearly. Jumping to the ending. The ending of the book was a big rollercoaster ride. It was strangely beautiful. Weird as an old man suckling a woman is, it’s a victory of the human spirit after such a horrible depressing series of events.…
