The batter waits for the pitcher to throw the ball toward home plate and tries to hit the ball. If the batter hits the ball into play the batter must drop the bat and start running toward first base. The catcher’s job is to catch the pitches that the batter doesn’t hit and return them to the pitcher.
If the batter fails to hit a well pitched ball or if he hits it so that it goes outside the field is called a strike. When the batter starts running he is now referred to as the “runner”. The runner’s goal is to reach a base where they could be safe. The defensive players try to stop the runners from reaching base by putting him out using the ball. Runners that get put out leave the field and go to the bench or dugout that’s the place where other inactive players watch the game.
