Sample Midterm Examination
The midterm examination is two (2) hours long. In the actual examination you would not be allowed to consult your books or notes; however, you would be able to use a calculator. We strongly recommend that you sit this examination as if you were writing it in an invigilated setting. You will get a much better idea of your degree of preparedness for the actual examination.
Part A: Short–answer Questions (1 mark each)
1. Calculate the density of bromine, given that 120.0 mL has a weight of 374.3 g. Report your answer to the correct number of significant figures and in units of g/mL.

2. What is the name of the compound FeCl3?

3. What is the chemical formula of ammonium chlorate?

4. How many neutrons are in the nucleus of the isotope

5. What is the weight percentage of P in H3PO4? Report your answer to three significant figures.

6. What is the molar mass of SnCl2? Report your answer to two decimal places.

7. 20.0 g each of BeO, carbon, and chlorine are mixed together and react according to the following equation. What is the theoretical yield of BeCl2? Report your answer in grams, to three significant figures. BeO(s) + C(s) + Cl2(g) ? BeCl2(g) + CO(g)

8. Write a balanced net ionic equation for the reaction between lead nitrate and sodium chloride, in solution.

9. What is the molarity of a 1.10 L solution containing 8.30 g of CaCl2? Report your answer to the correct number of significant figures.

10. How many millilitres of 0.305 M NaOH would be required to titrate a 5.00 mL solution of 0.616 M HBr? Report your answer to the correct number of significant figures.

11. Write a balanced chemical equation for the combustion of benzene, C6H6.

12. If the standard heat of combustion of benzene is –3271 kJ/mol,
[(CO2(g)] = –394 kJ/mol, and [H2O(l)] = –286 kJ/mol, calculate the standard heat of formation of benzene. Report your answer to the correct number of significant figures.

13. If a gas sample absorbs 59 kJ of heat

Given the mass of NaCl we can easily calculate moles using the fence method. First find the mass of one mole of NaCl, which is equal to 58.44 g. Then take the amount of moles you have been given, 1.7, and divide that by 58.44 g. The total number of moles in this problem is 0.03 moles. Given the mL of solution we can easily calculate liters, again using the fence method. Take the amount of mL given and use a conversion factor of 1 mL/1000 L to calculate that there is 0.75 liters in the final solution. To find Molarity you divide 0.03 moles/ 0.75 liters to end up with 0.04 Molarity.…
