Point Guard
The point guard position is an important position in the game of basketball. A point guard is sometimes referred to as the “General,” because they are usually the leader of the team and call the shots. Without a good point guard, it becomes a lot harder to keep control of the game. The point guard position is the most vital position in the game of basketball. Most people do not understand the importance of a point guard or the qualities it takes. People assume that anyone can be a good point guard, a team just needs a good shooter to win games; this is incorrect.
There are many types of point guards. Some like to score first, while others like to pass first. Although both can be effective at times, it is usually preferred if the point guards are a “pass first” player. An example of a scoring point guard is Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook. He averaged 23.6 points and only 5.3 assists per game in last year’s season. However, when it comes to a pass first point guard, there is nobody better than Rajon Rondo. He averaged 12.3 assists and only 11.8 points per game last season. These statistics are much better in regards to a point guard. Some people may think you would prefer a “score first” player, but that is not the case. Point guards, like Rondo, have better numbers due to the assists they have in a game. An assist is gained by a player when he or she passes the ball to a teammate and they score a basket. Without a point guard willing to pass first, it is almost like a one-man team. When the point guard is willing is pass, all the other teammates are involved and it makes for a better team.
Some of the best players of all time have been point guards. This includes players such as Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Bob Cousy, Pete Maravich, and Chris Paul. Those are just a few of the elite point guards who have played in the NBA. All of these players either are or will be in the Hall of Fame.
