I have been playing basketball basically my whole life, it is has shaped me into the person I am today. I started with just a ball and a hoop in my cousins front yard. I would just chuck the ball at hoop for fun, horsing around with my cousins. In elementary and middle school I would play with my friends at recess shooting around, dribbling in circles for the fun of it. I was even better then most of the boys who would play with my group on the courts. When I entered high school that was when I realized I was truly in love with the game. High school was where it was taken to a whole 'nother level. I was introduced to the real dynamics of the sport, it was where I learned that if I really want to do something that I love I had to put my all into it. I had to prove that I was one-hundred percent committed to the game. Practicing everyday for two hours, and…

Slavery played enormous roles in shaping the Revolution and its immediate aftermath during the years 1770 to 1800. Slavery in the colonies during this time period outlined the hypocritical nature of the revolutionaries as best seen in this quote from Foner. “’How is it … that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty from the drivers of negroes?’” (Foner, page 232) However, slavery also was a crucial party of the Colonies’ economies leading to the argument that slavery won Americans their war for Independence because of French aid. Moreover, slavery became a very contentious issue for the Nation to address after her battle for freedom was over.…

I have always love to play basketball. The swish when you make it just right, and the boom of the basketball hitting the floor “are sounds I love”. When I first started playing basketball, my mom and my couch Richard knew that I was expectational. I played with Richard for a few years, then one day he told us about this newspaper ad he saw for a team named “Eugene Fire”. My mom decided to check it out, so she called the coach, Jim. He said I probably won't make the team, but I believed I could. So I would try anyways.…

Both Lacrosse and Ice hockey are two sports that share similar aspects. One example would be that they both require plenty of athletic prowess, as well as countless hours of training and practice to master. The high amount of contact in both sports enables a player to become both physically and mentally "tough". Lacrosse has grown to its highest level of popularity it has ever reached over the last ten years. Ice hockey has seen a steady climb in its popularity over the past 25 years making it one of the most popular sports in not only Long Island, but all across the U.S. However, there are many differences as well, and we should not overlook the fact that there are plenty of distinctions between the two great sports. Many of which are the main reasons that these are obviously two separate sports.…

My family did not let me renounce my dream, and they helped me prepare for the next year’s tryouts by driving me to club tryouts, countless lessons, and intramurals. Daily, my brothers and I would practice in our backyard just tossing the ball around. Every day, I would improve, serve the ball further, and my confidence would grow. My dad encouraged me to attempt to play for club teams, and even if I didn’t earn a spot on the team, at least I would gain practice and experience. I tried out for four club teams, and I didn’t earn a spot on any of them, but I believed my skills were improving. By chance, I found one club was having their tryouts much later than all the others, and when I showed up, I was the only one there. They asked me to play for them, and I agreed, but they resulted to be private lessons. Every Monday, I would practice for a couple of hours with a student coach. Occasionally, I would play scrimmages for other teams. Most importantly, I enjoyed those weekly practices. In the final weeks, leading up to the school tryouts, I attended a variety of intramurals and camps. I enjoyed playing with other girls, and I enjoyed the sport. Even though I was usually the weakest player, I enjoyed playing the sport more than winning. When the time came, I was confident in my abilities and prepared to earn a spot on the…

There was a general interest meeting for anyone who wanted to play on the school team. I was confident I could return to my geeky ways if there were no other beginners on the team. As I nervously walked into the gym, it seemed like every kid on the court was born with a basketball in his hand. I stood on the sideline and tried to look somewhat coordinated by bouncing an occasional dribble. I watched in awe as kids came up the court and effortlessly hit shot after shot. They could drive to the hoop with ease and made me feel like I was born with two left feet with their fancy dribble moves. The coach walked out of his office and announced to the group that basketball tryouts would be in November. It was already September, and it would take a miracle worker to bring me to the skill level I needed to make the team. I was short and had never touched a basketball in my life. What was I doing here? The mountain I anticipated was in reality Mt. Everest. I could never see myself in a million years having what it takes to be good at basketball. But I kept hearing soft whispers inside my mind to just try it. Maybe it was because it was a new school year and a new beginning. Maybe it was because I had friends who lived and breathed basketball. Whatever the reason, I signed up for…

Since I was 7 years old, basketball has played an integral part of my life. I have devoted countless hours to not just a sport, but a passion, an outlet; to the game that I love. When I arrived at Bow Middle School as a fifth grader, my classmates and I would always look up to the 7th and 8th grade middle school basketball teams. Every year during winter carnival, the boys and girls teams would play a game in front of the entire school. Playing in that game became a dream and a goal of mine, but first I would need to make the team. For three years I developed my basketball skills, using my passion for the sport and desire to play in that game as motivation. When tryouts for basketball in 8th grade drew near, I knew I was ready. However a new coach would be at the helm this year. Our new basketball coach was also a coach for the youth football program. This resulted in numerous football…
