Basketball's Greatest Failure
In life, everyone will fail at something. Failure is defined as lack of success, or the inablitity to meet a goal. Failing, however, is not giving up. Failing is motivation to push yourself to your max potential. Winston Churchill once said “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” This quote has been the backbone to my drive and passion in playing basketball. My passion for basketball began in the 7th grade. My middle school was having tryouts for our schools team and I had grown up shooting in my driveway almost everyday. Practicing for the chance of being a Bronco basketball player (Our schools mascot). Coach had set up tryouts for two days. The first being a open tryout, and the second the final people he wanted to choose from. In short, I did not make it past the first day. The coach didn't see the potential in me. I was hurt but inside I knew that I would push myself and make the team the next year. …show more content…
I had spent much more time practing and conditioning myself in order to make it. I ended up playing Junior Varsity for the middle school, playing only a few minutes a game, as an 8th grader. To me, this drove me more then not making the team. I was embarresed and could've been considered the worst on my team. After the season, coach had announced the Sam Houston High School coach would be having a tryout for the high school team. I figured I had nothing to lose and came to the tryout not prepared, messing around, but still somehow managed to make the team. I was shocked but full of

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

7th grade tryouts were the first time that I actually had to try out for a school sports team, It was the most nervous I had ever been in my life up to that point. The summer that led up to tryouts consisted of throwing off that Louisville Slugger net to work on my fielding. I had made the improvements that I felt were necessary and put in the hard work that now has defined me as a player and as a student.…

My experience with failure came with athletics. For my whole life I have always been involved in sports like soccer, tennis, basketball. When I was in the fourth grade I joined a swim team and that was the first and really only sport that I stuck with; swimming came naturally to me, and it was something that I could do year round and I loved every minute of it. However, once I was in high school I stopped swimming and joined my high school’s cross country team. My dad was a runner all throughout high school so I thought it would be a good idea to give the sport my father loved a chance. The cross country team allowed me to grow, and I learned things about myself including that fact that I can’t run. It’s not that I can’t physically run, I have…

I was extremely nervous despite the fact that everyone had told me I was going to make varsity since I had done so well at camp. There were about 23 people trying out for varsity and only 18 could make it and so I had a good chance at making the team but that still did not calm my nerves. Before we went out to the brand new turf field for tryouts I was psyching myself out and was doubting myself in all ways possible. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, all while listening to the calm chatter of everyone else echoing loudly in the locker room. “You can’t make varsity; the others are just too good” I was telling myself. During tryouts the pace was fast, the humidity was high, and our spirits were just as high. We had to do lots of ball work and ball skills on the first day and I was messing up completely at times. At one point I screamed out in utter anger because I just could not get my feet to do the correct things. I was so angry with myself because I knew I could do better than what I had done that day. I went home feeling utterly defeated but ready for the next day because there were two days of tryouts. The next day I felt absolutely great and I was doing everything right! I was passing every drill while receiving complements from my coaches. I felt great and as I was walking up the big, blue steps to the locker room, I knew that I had done great at…

I remember it like it was yesterday, well if you wanted to be technical you could say I remembered the whole last week, considering this was nearly the seventh time it had happened. I remember falling to my knees with my head against the fabric of my bed sheets while balling my weary eyes up into huge puddles of tears buried in my pillow, asking myself why didn't they pick me ? "why aren't I good enough ?!". Making the school Basketball team is something that was a very huge goal for me at the start of every school year, and a motive at the start of every summer.Till this day I haven't made neither my middle school nor high school Basketball team, I've only came very close. My freshman year of high school is where it hurt the most. I had finally started to get a…

All my life I have excelled at 2 sports, basketball and soccer. I have always put basketball on a pedestal above soccer, both because of my talent for the sport, and because I enjoyed playing it more. I never truly realized the potential I had until 9th grade, I loved my coach and my coach seemed to really believe in me as a player and a person. He seemed to think the sky was the limit for me, and he had me believing in myself as well. Before I knew it the season had flown by, and I had led my team scoring that year, as a freshman! My dream of playing college basketball had never been stronger and I had the determination to make that dream come true.…

Life is full of unexpected challenges that can result in failure. Even though failure is difficult to go through it is important to learn from your mistakes and to use them as building blocks to future success. I learned how failure can lead to future success when I did not accomplish my biggest goal during my sophomore season of cross country. I had found success throughout the whole season and my goal was set at the last three races of the season. The success in the season was fun but my failure in the end of the season was the most memorable and ultimately is what I learned from the most.…

For some people it takes forever to figure out that failure is not always a bad thing, while at the time it may seem like the end of the world. “We are all potentially capable of any human act.” (Roth 39). Even the most successful of people have failed at something at least once in their lives. Maybe consider though, that failure was what brought them back up to the best, hardest working person that they could be and it did not take long for them to retrieve what they had lost and made it ten times better!…
