Ferdinand E. Marcos, a man that is considered as one of the most brightest Filipino on his years but who have been thought that this exceptional man will be the cruelest man and will mark a history to his fellow Filipino that want to escaped and forget their reminiscences when they have been placed under Martial Law.
As I sat and watched the documentary film about Martial Law, I get so excited because I was given a chance to go back in 1970’s time which luckily I was not able to experience it and also I want to have an idea what my fellowmen feels when Ferdinand E. Marcos declared that Philippines is under Martial Law. It is really a great opportunity to the Government of the Philippines when Ferdinand E. Marcos was became the President because he is one of the brightest and for that he can make a progressive change to our country but because of what he have done when he proclaimed that Philippines is under Martial Law many Filipinos disagree with it because they want democracy. Marcos has a lot of defended reasons why he declared it one is stressing the need for extra powers to quell the rising wave of violence allegedly cause by communist and the second one is to have a fortunate country. But to be honest of I have seen in the documentary film, Marcos wants to own and govern our country on his own way without thinking what will be the possible reactions of his fellowmen. If he would follow of what he have defended that why he declared Martial Law I would really salute him for putting the Philippines on a progressive state but because of what I have witnessed on my eyes my appreciation of what he is was wrecked. Democracy and Human Rights are what the Filipinos at that certain moment are fighting for. Filipinos are really hopeless at that time that’s why the violence increases from day by day, the military treats the people violently I can really say that when the Martial Law began each day is a tragedy to the Filipinos but the only way they can escaped to this is to fight even if the exchange of it is their souls. I am very proud of being a Filipino when I saw my fellowmen became as a whole, unity is their armors at that time and Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. was their hope but when Aquino was in prison together with Jose Diokno because of his warnings that Philippines was being slowly in “garrison state” under of Marcos presidency, the heart of the Filipinos became more stronger. The time comes when the anti-government makes a move and started doing rallies concerning about the increase of prices gasoline and basic commodities and especially to the corruption. The government at that time didn’t ponder and understand the side of the mass. The downhearted feeling is, almost all of the companies are owned by the Marcos family, Imelda’s family and most especially to the Rolex 12. It is really horrifying because also the media like newspapers, television was own and controlled by the Marcos. That’s how Ferdinand E. Marcos introduced to his fellowmen what tragedy really like.
Having a chance to know and to have a complete understanding to our history is a favorable one but realizing what they have done is indeed ashamed. Yes, I am proud to be Filipino but ashamed to my government, as what Thomas Jefferson quoted “History, in general, only informs us of what bad government is.”
PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION
Filipinos are in unison, they fight hand in hand. Democracy is what they want. The powerful force of democracy is the masses. The so-called bloodless revolution erupted that touches in every hearts and minds of the Filipino.
On February 25, 1986 when Cory Aquino was declared as the President of the Republic of Philippines and the moment when the people rejoice when Ferdinand E. Marcos left the country. This history gave us a strong sense of pride. This event is very important to us Filipino because our democracy have been restored when Marcos placed our country under Martial Law without the shed of blood. It gives us an insight how strong we are because when the masses arouse an action for the same goal they were able to defeat the powerful dictator. For me, if I was able to experience this kind tragedy I would definitely feel like I am one of the hero because if our fellowmen did not fight for their right or for the democracy for our country it has a bigger chance that we might able to experience how it’s like to be under dictatorship. Our fellow Filipino has shown to the universe of the true power of democracy. Enormous number of people and militaries under the command of Marcos withdrew. Celebrities expressed their support even the priest and nuns supported thru their powerful prayers. This scene really touches my heart, I cannot really imagine how brave the Filipino’s are. With their efforts, they proved to shrug off a dictator by a demonstration without any violence or even bloodshed. Just imagined how brave they really are, only prayers and rosaries were the only weapons they used to recover their freedom from the cruelest dictator. We truly have our own way to achieve democracy.
Our fellow Filipinos gathered in one with faith and valor to prevail democracy. It is undeniably true that when the tragedy strikes, bravery is proven.
EDSA DOS
Another mournful and one of the memorable events had come, another problem and a new President of the Republic of the Philippines. Joseph Estrada was accused by Govt. Chavit Singson of Ilocos as the “lord of jueteng” and receiving kickbacks that worth a hundred million, how does this happen?
On the 21st day of October 2000, another problem had come, several of protest when the President of the Philippines was accused by a certain politicians. I remember that I was 5 to 6 years of age at this certain moment; it’s even fresh from thoughts until right now. I can truly said that it is really a traumatic experience for me because I was able to witnessed not personally but I saw in Television what Estrada did to the Filipinos again. As I watch the documentary video numbers of people in EDSA are again fight against the President and they even form a “Human Chain” from EDSA Shrine to Ayala Ave. in Makati City, to show Estrada that thousands of people are already demanding his resignation. I was pondering, why our country always face a lot of trials, and all of it is about having a bad way of governing the Philippines, is it about the people who voted or it is just really a dirty game? But then I realize that politics is indeed a dirty game, a lot of people want to lead to our country but almost all of them just want to have a power towards our money. They are just like Marcos. I thought of what Marcos have done to our history the Filipinos will make a move and change but for what I have seen in the EDSA DOS it’s really about gaining profits and owning our country. Some of the Filipinos did not realize that in past years a lot of 1970’s people fought for our democracy on our country. Why some of us cannot do in the same way? In order for us to pay back to our fellow Filipinos who fight for the democracy that we want to acquire in our country. As I continue watching the film different of feelings showed up especially anger towards Estrada but when he resign peacefully and said farewell to the Filipinos I was relieve. In this kind of scene the government should start having a reform movement so that the protest of the people will not be wasted.
Even some of the fellow Filipinos forgotten what other Filipinos did in order for all of us to have a democracy but once again, the Filipinos have shown the sense of unity for peace. May the spirit of EDSA lives on.

Plea bargaining is a very familiar process in our criminal justice system. Usually, the defense is allowed to bargain with a prosecutor to have a defendant plead guilty to a criminal accusation with the hope of getting a lighter punishment. The problem with this immediate approach is that dangerous offenders are pleading guilty to small misbehavior charges and they are keeping a cleaner record than they should have and getting reduced sentence. Plea bargaining is needed on the other hand defendants tried on felony charges should not be able to appeal down to small misbehavior charges.…

* Being the leader of a country, a President’s decision can greatly affect the present situation that the country is facing. Whatever decision he makes can sum up his abilities towards leading his people. It influences the people with the President’s decision in terms of support or disapproval. Support in the sense that if he’s decisions are acceptable for the people or group of people, he gets endorsed and applaud for the validity of his action. Disapproval in the sense that if it is denied by the people, the President is subject for explanation, he is also vulnerable for mockery among his people. The final decision he would then make will be the verdict of what’s waiting for the country, especially in times of war. If reasonable actions were already made but the peace among people is still missing, a President can declare Martial Law as his final resort. To lead the country in times of war is never easy. The President’s capacity to declare martial law in a time of chaos will be a great way for the President to fully think of what he should do while the country is on idle mode. Although he’s declaration will still be grounded on the approval of the other branches of the Philippine government, consent towards its declaration will be based on necessity.…

On September 21, 1972, Marcos issued Proclamation 1081, declaring martial law over the entire country , claiming that it was the last defense against the rising disorder caused by increasingly violent student demonstrations, the alleged threats of communist insurgency by the new Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), and the Muslim separatist movement of theMoro National Liberation Front (MNLF). One of his first actions was to arrest opposition politicians in Congress and the Constitutional Convention. Initial public reaction to martial law was mostly favourable except in Muslim areas of the south, where a separatist rebellion, led by the MNLF, broke out in 1973. Despite halfhearted attempts to negotiate a cease-fire, the rebellion continued to claim thousands of military and civilian casualties. Communist insurgency expanded with the creation of the National Democratic Front (NDF), an organization embracing the CPP and other communist groups.…

During 1960’s the Philippine economy has experienced repeated boom-and-bust cycles in the 5 decades since the nation achieved independence from the United States. In 1960s its economy ranked as the second most progressive in Asia, next to that of Japan. After 1965, when Ferdinand E. Marcos became president, the nation experienced economic problems and social unrest, especially from the 1970s, when corruption and cronyism (the practice of appointing friends to well-paid posts regardless of their qualifications) took hold. The Philippines in the late 1960s and early 1970s saw a rise student activism and civil unrest against President Ferdinand Marcos who declared martial law in 1972. The peaceful and bloodless People Power Revolution of 1986, however, brought about the ousting of Marcos and a return to democracy for the country. The period since then, however, has been marked by political instability and hampered economic productivity.…

BACKGROUND ON MARCOS' RISE TO POWER Marcos came from a rich and politically prominent family in Ilocos, a province in the northern part of the Philippines. He began his political career in 1949, being elected to the House of Representatives as congressman of Ilocos. In 1965, he was elected as President of the Senate. He then (as a Nacionalista, one of the 2 main political parties) ran for president and gained victory over the incumbent president, Diosdado Macapagal. Marcos promised to "make the nation great again," and during his first term of 6 years Marcos gained widespread popularity through his extensive economic and political achievements. In 1969 Marcos became the first (and up to the moment, still the only) re-elected president of the Philippines. During his second term however, Marcos lost popularity due to the extensive graft and corruption of his favoured cronies, and the human rights violations of the Marcos administration when he proclaimed Martial Law on September 21, 1972. He lifted Martial Law in 1981 after reducing the opposition by…

The year 1986 opened the door to a new era of military interventions in Philippine politics. The EDSA People Power Revolt showcased a total makeover in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) image, evolving from an armed forces subservient to a 20-year dictatorship (Selochan, 1989:1) to an armed forces dubbed as the “protector of the Filipino people[i]” (De Leon, 2005: 47-49). However, barely four months after installing President Corazon C. Aquino in office, various elements in the military – Marcos loyalists, Guardians, and the RAM-SFP-YOU staged four successive failed coup attempts and two aborted coup plots from July 1986 to August 1987 (Selochan, 1989:11-15). Then again, in December 1989, just when civilian authority over the military seemed to have already been functioning, another failed coup attempt was launched, which almost toppled down the presidency. After a decade of calm at the close of the century, the AFP barged once more into the political limelight when former AFP Chief of Staff Gen Angelo Reyes, along with the commanders of the Army, Navy and the Air Force, unexpectedly withheld their support from their Commander-in-Chief at the height of EDSA Dos, which eventually forced the former president to leave Malacanang (Trillanes, 2004:14).…

Martial law is imposition from the president due to from the crisis of the country in terms of order and security. It is usually imposed when civilian authorities and the government doesn’t function properly. As a result, the discontent public executes protests towards the government. It is controversial because it gives absolute power to the president; military forces are then deployed to maintain order. The three branches of government executive, legislation and judicial are removed thus having no power. It is a means to have control over the public and used to maintain law. Several rules come along with martial law such as curfews, stricter laws and the absence of civil rights. Simplified, that means the military can do anything and no action would be taken to have their actions justified. This leads to my next topic as to why Philippines were in a 21-year period as a president and 9 years in martial law.…
