The Civil War was the most divisive war in American history. In the early 1800s, the United States experienced a growth of nationalism and unity, but it was replaced by sectionalism, leading to the Civil War. There were many reasons why the South wanted to secede, reasons the North wanted to maintain the Union, and the controversy surrounding slavery and steps taken to abolish it.…
British Attack Charleston From February 11to May 12, 1780 British LT. Henry Clinton attacked and captured Charleston, SC so Britain’s attack strategy to end the American revolution would have a higher chance of working. After the British colonies failed to control the Northern colonies they created a strategy to control the southern colonies in hopes of all colonies following their example. For this strategy to work they need to take over Charleston.…
What provoked the Whiskey Rebellion? How did the government respond? In your answer, discuss the foundations and precedents of the conflict as well as the significance of the government’s response.…
Starting with Shay’s Rebellion in 1786 then with the Whiskey Rebellion following in 1791 and the last being Fries’ Rebellion in 1799 were three rebellions the uncultivated American government had to put down and dispose of. Shay’s Rebellion being the first and biggest set the standard for each. All the rebellions thought they were exercising their rights and following their nation’s suite by revolting and using their voice and Shay’s case arms as well. After the Revolutionary War the United States was in major debt and needed to pay if off somehow. Taxing, an easy way for governments to collect revenue, seemed logical for the new nation but it lacked the layout to enforce settlers in the west. To keep their hold over the squatters bills were starting to be passed providing a heavier burden of…
Captured in 1778 Georgia was the only colony conquered by britain. America later became allies with France who sent 47 ships bringing 5,000 soldiers and 500 Haitians to help. The two new allies linked up and ordered the british to surrender the city. The british general received 24 hours to decide. The british then had 800 more soldiers sent to Georgia to then begin a battle. The battle went horribly for the colonies. 700 allies died trying to stand their ground and keep the flag standing. The british kept savannah for 3 more years after the Siege of Savannah.…
Indiana: [The law requires separate schools for colored and white children.] [1869] This meant there were separate schools for colored and non colored with the colored schools being lesser then the white schools.…
The British commanded by Admiral Graves, came with 19 ships of reinforcements for Yorktown and met the French Fleet of 29 ships. The French out gunned and defeated the British Fleet ending the engagement and caused them to return to New York City. The next planned naval assault was planned, however it was set for days after the surrender of Cornwallis. Even though this battle was French Naval Forces, this was crucial in the siege of Yorktown and set the stage for the battle to…
A century and a half ago, our nation faced a civil war. More than 620,000 Americans lost their lives at the hands of other Americans, which was subsequently equal to the total number of American deaths in all other wars combined (O’keefe). The reason for this senseless war, the Confederate States of the South wanted to keep African Americans enslaved. As Southerners fought and killed to defend slavery, they did so under the confederate flag, which consisted of the colors red, white, and blue. Terrorist groups like the Ku Klux Klan and many other white supremacist groups, led hanise crimes against African Americans which included: lynching, burning crosses, and mass murders, while using the Confederate Flag as a symbol of “unity”. A flag that stands for hatred and white supremacy is not only allowed but glorified. The confederate emblem should, not only be taken out of the Mississippi state flag, but the confederate flag should be banned from the United States.…
The issue of the Confederate Flag has a long history. The fight in Michigan is over a different flag, the "Betsy Ross" flag. It was made in 1777. This was not long after the Declaration of Independence. The flag has 13 stars and 13 stripes. They stand for the 13 original colonies. These colonies became the United States. 240 years have passed by and the flag is now an issue to many people of color because, when the flag was made it was during the time of slavery and it was flown during the early days many people owned many slaves. In some parts of the world, such as North America there is a tremendous dispute over flowing the Confederate Flag in Columbia, South Carolina. South Carolina is mostly populated with many black people and there are also white people who flew the flags on their car. There are many flags…
Black soldiers have a very important part in the Civil War at the moment. They are fighting in the war because they need their freedom, the war is about slavery, and the Emancipation Proclamation is taking action.…
The Declaration of Independence states that “All men are created equal,” but due to the institution of slavery, woman not having the right to vote, income inequality this statement was not to be grounded in law in the United States until after the Civil War and not satisfied for many years thereafter. It was not until 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment was confirmed and finally put an end to slavery. After the 14 there were still some flaws in the southern states denying one’s rights because of race, so finally came the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870 to further strengthen the legal rights of newly freed slaves by prohibiting states…
On April 12, 1861, the Confederacy declared war against the Union because both the South and the North had different outtakes on U.S problems. The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865, but along the way it caused lots of geographic changes. Although it ended four years later, many problems damaged both sides of the United States, especially the South. Southern women faced starvation and poverty when their husbands and sons, who took care of the farms, went away to war. In the South, there were many riots by women demanding for supplies to provide for their families during this time. The Union would often steal crops and livestock from the South, causing the Southerners to have no food to give to their families.…
I was shocked watching the movie on how Whites treated Blacks like trash, it was very unpleasant to watch. Since 1865 president Lincoln abolished slavery and then a little decade ago they still continue to enslave the Blacks. It was like just a dream for now, but still a terrible nightmare. Also about the movie, I was confuesd on the Ku Klux Klan; they have a cross to symbolize God and somehow burn it, is it a bad thing or good? Anyway to see them doing that just terrible, I'm not a religious person but to those people somehow represents hatred to God and it's not very good to burn a cross. Also the ironic part about it is KKK goes to churches to worship God and somehow burn crosses, which I'm really confused on. After abolishing slavery the Blacks wanted to own land, but when Lincoln was assassinated, newly elected president Andrew Jackson said he was against freeing the slaves. Well it looks like abolishing slavery didn't happen when he was president and all the Black that were freed are slaves again. This doesn't seem very fair at all, Jackson is racist when it comes to Black people, he said that the country, USA, is only for the White race meaning own land, property, food, everything that the Black wanted all taken away. This was very unfair to the Blacks, and I was very upset that the changes happen after Lincoln died. When another guy name Oliver Howard, a christian general, who wanted to help out the Blacks to get some land, they gathered in the church for how they can stop slavery from Jackson and the Whites. So one White person is somehow with the Blacks to help out getting the Black's land. It was so nice of him to do that.…
To the shock, dismay and disappointment, the war continued. Amos Sawyer and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) attempt for a cease fire, held numerous peace conference monitored by the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire. These peace talks failed as soon as the various parties got back to their headquarters. Mr. Taylor would sign the peace accord, but would not abide by it.…
The Battle of Hastings took place in the year of AD 1066 after a dispute over the progression to the English throne. The Battle of Hastings was so significant because it was the battle that changed history. It had a huge impact on the people and their culture, the country, and the way they were looked upon by the world. It was the hardest for the Saxon people to swallow it, and they were stripped of rights and privileges. The Saxons organized many rebellions they were all unsuccessful and were easily embossed out.…
