That morning Colonel Steele, a new leader of the boys, praised them again the next morning. Now they again were to engage in battle. At 1:07 in the afternoon, gun fire started the battle. Alex and Charlie stayed together as they had promised Becca. The firing continued for three hours until everything became silent.
Confederates fled out from the woods in which they hid. The artillery began opened again and the Seventh Michigan was involved. As Alex rose and darted he was hit by the fire of a gun. Alex tried calling for Charlie but there wasn’t an answer. Suddenly he fell unconscious.

She often thought of Alex and Charlie’s soon return. But with draft riots across the East River, Tunis spoke of Becca moving to her sister Emma’s home on Long Island.
Becca started to worry about the Gettysburg battle. It had been a desperate fight. All Becca carried about was her boys getting home, yet Sarah wouldn’t agree to the visit. Therefor Becca set off on her own for the Battery.
Once at the Battery she met a lieutenant who helped her track down the Seventh Michigan. “Forman, A. A., and Gregory, C. W.,” she had told him. After looking for the names, he finally looked up asking, “Have you heard from either of these boys. They suffered a great loss and I can only presume for the fact that they are not listed here that they did their final duty.” Could both of them really be gone? Becca’s head began spinning.
When Becca got home she lay in her bed, thinking upon the day’s events. Becca couldn’t sleep that night for she couldn’t only think of the words “presumed dead.” Tunis told her he would try and help to find out more about the boys and had connections, but recent happenings prevented him. All Becca wanted to do was to return to Michigan and so she told Sarah and Tunis her
