an answer. Of the Jonesville Light Guard, twenty-one were killed in action and Charlie was missing.
Becca had taken the journey to see her sisters. Sarah wanted all the news from back home the second Becca arrived. Their father was trying to trade their house for the Haynes Tavern in Pulaski.
Becca settled at Sarah and her husband Tunis’s home.
She often thought of Alex and Charlie’s soon return. But with draft riots across the East River, Tunis spoke of Becca moving to her sister Emma’s home on Long Island.
Becca started to worry about the Gettysburg battle. It had been a desperate fight. All Becca carried about was her boys getting home, yet Sarah wouldn’t agree to the visit. Therefor Becca set off on her own for the Battery.
Once at the Battery she met a lieutenant who helped her track down the Seventh Michigan. “Forman, A. A., and Gregory, C. W.,” she had told him. After looking for the names, he finally looked up asking, “Have you heard from either of these boys. They suffered a great loss and I can only presume for the fact that they are not listed here that they did their final duty.” Could both of them really be gone? Becca’s head began spinning.
When Becca got home she lay in her bed, thinking upon the day’s events. Becca couldn’t sleep that night for she couldn’t only think of the words “presumed dead.” Tunis told her he would try and help to find out more about the boys and had connections, but recent happenings prevented him. All Becca wanted to do was to return to Michigan and so she told Sarah and Tunis her
decision.
Tunis’s connects were Uncle Andrew Case. Andrew asked Becca if she would like to accompany her to the Davids Island military hospital. Sarah accepted for her. Therefore Becca took the ride to the hospital.
