The name given to them was The Lost Battalion. On October 2nd, the division quickly advanced into Argonne forest where they thought they would be support by French forces. They didn't know the French advance had been stalled by over a day. Without this info, they marched beyond the Allied line and found themselves surrounded by German forces. Over the next six days they suffered heavy loss due to attacks by the Germans, food shortages, water shortage, and friendly fire. 197 of the men were killed and 150 were either taken prisoner or went missing before the remaining 194 men were rescued.
The Battle of Argonne-Meuse, as stated earlier, was the most bloody battle of World War I. The Germans lost the most lives out of the three countries involved. They lost a total of 28,000 soldiers throughout the battle. The United States lost 26,277 soldiers out of the 1.2 million soldiers brought over died during the battle. The French also suffered 70,000 casualties. Even though both suffered so much loss, on side had to win and that was the allies
