Hello, my name is Bao Nguyen. Today, our panel of speakers Nathan, and William and I will be discussing Act 1, Scene 1 of shake sphere’s masterwork, and making a comparison of the play and deconstruction of the ways it has been interpreted.
Baz luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet is a modern day film adaption to William Shakespeare’s Play, created in 1996. This film deals with issues of violence, hatred and love, it also features the original dialogue of William Shakespeare’s play, but replaces some of the dialogue by visual elements. This film is also significantly shorter than the original movie directed by Franco Zeffirelli. I shall now present an overview of the film and evaluation of the cinematography.
The film begins with a TV that is broadcasting important news. The TV is at a long distance, but slowly pans in as the news presenter is talking about the story. Only words of her broadcasting can be heard, and this makes the TV broadcast ‘flat’. The camera stops at a close range and the news presenter concludes the story. This piece of the movie very effective in telling the event that is yet to occur. There is a sudden flash of buildings, and between is, a statue of Jesus shown. A theatrical music piece begins to play. The camera is then panned backwards from the statue of Jesus, to show an image of the twin towers at the center of the city, the names of Montague and Capulet is set conspicuously atop of each one and in-between is a church. This shows that the church is dwarfed and religion is not important and materialistic value rule rather than religious values. It then cuts over to a helicopter and then to a man who is injured. This shows that there is a strong feud between the Montague and Capulets, and that their feud is affecting the community. A statue of Jesus and shown again, and the camera pans out to reveal Lord Capulet and Montague, Lady Capulet/ Montague and Romeo and Juliet. This is effective
