Beach Erosion
Beach erosion longstanding challenge for southeastern NC

There is a major environmental concern in the southeastern region North Carolina; it is beach erosion. However do not worry, the article states “The good news is that we do have alternatives to help control erosion, but the bad news is that these alternatives can also have negative consequences.”. A method that is able to help control erosion is beach nourishment, although it is not a cure for beach erosion, but rather a treatment to help the illness. Beach nourishment doesn't stop beach erosion but instead “it puts enough sand in place that it takes time to wash that new sand away.”. Meanwhile, the southeastern area has a beach as well as to provide hurricane protection. A source named Roger says “The bottom line is that erosion is a part of life here in southeastern North Carolina and the sooner we realize how to live with it well, the better off we'll be.” And “This is only a temporary solution and as we see more development, we need to focus on the long term solution,”.
I believe that this is a huge problem, although it may not seem so at this specific time and this specific moment. I believe that more attention should be drawn toward this situation. This is because the beach erosion could lead to something bigger, something unknown. Just because they currently have a temporary treatment to this problem does not mean it is okay to settle. A source named Roger states that “The bottom line is that erosion is a part of life here in southeastern North Carolina and the sooner we realize how to live with it well, the better off we'll be.”. I highly disagree with this statement, this statement is saying that we have no choice and we just have to deal with it; that is not okay. We need to find a long-term solution as soon as we can because like the article said Mother Nature will react. In my opinion, more attention should be drawn to this situation because it could lead to even more dangerous problems and

New Jersey is often used as an example of a natural system gone awry. The unflattering term "New Jerseyization" was coined by a prominent scientist to describe a developed, eroding coast, where natural beaches have been replaced by engineering structures. This view may have been correct in the past, when seawalls and bulkheads replaced many of our beaches, but our beaches are being brought back by artificial nourishment projects. Hard protection structures are only one phase in the cycle of changes on a developed coast. Human efforts can help regenerate landforms and biota, providing we take a proactive approach to shore protection that accommodates a wide range of resource values. The preferred method of shore protection in New Jersey has changed from groins, to bulkheads and seawalls, to beach nourishment. Hard protection structures are less likely to be built in the future, but many structures still exist, and some new structures may have local usefulness. Accordingly, it is important to know how these structures function. It is also important to know that all protection strategies have usefulness, but they are not readily interchangeable at a given location. Beach nourishment can help restore lost natural values, but many municipalities have elected to grade and rake their nourished beaches, preventing them from evolving into topographically and biologically diverse natural environments. The large amount of sand scheduled to be pumped onto New Jersey beaches in the future represents an invaluable resource, but the full potential of nourishment will not be realized without addressing habitat improvement and nature-based tourism in addition to the goals of protection from erosion and flooding and provision of recreation space. A dune is another valuable natural resource that is often overlooked. Dunes provide protection from flooding and…

These are examples of how humans have physically impacted the beach and its structure. The flight deck is a human residential block of units on the edge of the beach. This unit block has massively affected the shaping and the beachfront of that area of Collaroy beach. The coastal processes that are threatening the erosion of the beachfront developments are, Erosion/Accretion Cycle (or sediment budget), destructive storm waves and king tides. These processes are slowly undermining the building and causing the dune under the units to become unstable and dangerous for people living in and around them. Also the salts from the waves blowing onto the units causes the metal to rust and the foundation of the building and balcony handrails to be at risk of being unreliable and…

The photo above was taken in Pensacola Beach, Florida in May 2017 at just about sunset at 7:23 PM. As you can see from the picture, there is very little beach left in Pensacola. One reason is linked to rising sea levels from global warming of the Earth’s climate system. New ocean water from melting reservoirs of ice could potentially raise the sea level as much as 3 feet by the year 2100 (Florida Oceans and Coastal Council). Increased water temperatures are also linked to increased hurricane activity, which has the potential to cause severe damage to the coastline. As you can see from picture 2, the beach area is much smaller after hurricane Ivan came through. Buildings damaged from hurricanes had to be relocated and replaced and others will…

The earth is currently facing some very serious issues in our environment, global warming, air pollution and the unlimited use of our natural resources, just to name a few. With activist groups on both sides of the isle, it’s hard to decide at times which way to lean. Each side usually appears to have a very valid line of reasoning when it comes to their side of the argument. For example; according to column writer Trevor Brown of the Wyoming News, “an environmental group in the state of Wyoming is considering legal action against a wind farm because they feel that it would devastate local sage grouse and golden eagle populations. They claimed that the wind farm 's location would interfere with habitat of the birds and therefore cause a dramatic decrease in their populations. The advocates for the wind farm say that the farm is at a high enough altitude that it would not interfere with the birds at all. In short, if the courts rule in favor of the Chokecherry Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project, construction will proceed as early as 2013.” (Brown) But what if a group of locals, from Southern California, begin to raise issues regarding the protection of local beaches? In 1984 this is precisely what happened, thus the Surfrider Foundation was created. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization that began in 1984 when a group of surfers were determined to voice their opinions regarding the protection of their local beaches.…

top all the sand from being taken and deposited somewhere else by long shore drift. Another strategy to stop erosion in front of people homes on the coast line was installing terracotta pots for waves, this wouldn’t be permanent and wouldn’t stop all the erosion taking place. A few houses down a resident has built a concrete retaining wall to stop erosion happening. All of these measures are short term and inconsistent and wouldn’t be as effective as if all the residents did the same management strategies.…

However, there is a way to alleviate some of the problems. All the municipalities along the entire New Jersey coastline should require the homeowners to rebuild their homes above ground level. These homes should be built on pilings that are anchored deep into the ground with a minimum height requirement of 6 feet above ground level. The sand dunes should be rebuilt on a minimum height scale. This would mean less displacement of sand throughout the…

It is likely that the Norfolk cliffs have been eroding at the present rate for about the last 5000 years when sea level rose to within a metre or two of its present position (Clayton, 1989). Therefore, the future predictions of sea level rise and storm frequency due to climate change are likely to have a profound impact on coastal erosion and serious consequences for the effectiveness of coastal protection and sea defence schemes in East Anglia in the near future (Thomalla and Vincent, 2003).…

Gold Coast is best known for its spectacular coastline beaches, which makes it a very popular place for local, national and international tourists to spend a holiday at. Coastal erosion can definitely effect tourism, because if the beach is not protected then people would not go there because it wouldn’t be safe, it would look horrible and it just wouldn’t live up to their expectations. By preventing coastal erosion beaches would be safer and therefore more tourists would come in and enjoy their stay. However these sea defences can put off tourist as they might not be visually pleasing, which can also cause people not to visit these beaches. The effects of erosion degrade the landscape, making it less attractive from a…

I found this article to be very informative. I and I presume many others were not aware of the large amounts of disease causing pathogens on the beach. When I go to the beach, I always see people eating lots of food and playing in the sand, but I never see anyone using hand sanitizer or washing their hands before eating. I think that if more local studies were put out it would inform the public and they would be able to protect themselves from dangerous pathogens. In the article I saw a picture of and pipe that was releasing raw sewage directly into water at Delray Beach in Florida. How can people be dumping sewage into the water, where people eat and drink and expect no negative outcomes? I personally believe that this needs to be stopped…

In addition to the devastating that Hurricane Irene caused in the same area the year prior, birds and other animals were scattered. The soaring winds catapult birds to different locations, sometimes hundreds of miles from their familiar habitat. While some species of birds were finishing up their migration route to warmer weather, the irresistible winds led birds astray and separated the weaker ones from their flock. In some cases, the birds can recover within a few weeks and find their designated location, but others are not as successful. On the same not, sea mammals that are unable to seek shelter in open water or near the shore, can also be harmed by being blown onto shore. On the other hand, the ocean water can harm other bodies of water and the subsequent wildlife and vegetation. In addition to the water that flowed through Manhattan during Sandy, storm surges created piles of salty ocean water, causing the contamination of fresh water. Coastal marshes and bays quickly transformed into deadly areas with the addition of the foreign salt. Upon the shifting of the delicate balance, creatures and vegetation without high tolerance for the salt addition suffer and decease. Whether it be marsh grasses, minnows, insects, or crabs the previously thriving wildlife is replaced by the killing salt and a disturbed habitat. Along the same lines, the intrusion of salt water does not drain quickly, resulting in the harm and/or killing of bottomland forests, and other coastal trees from the contaminated soil. The reverse can also occur and cause destruction to saltwater environments. Overall, Hurricane Sandy exposed the unpreparedness of my family and the majority of families it effected. To be ready, it is important to stock up on necessities in the case of a power outage, and to be aware of the geological processes taking place that effect not…
