Love is a universal emotion. Everyone has felt love towards something or someone in their lives. Love can bring about joy and happiness, tears and fears, hate and anger, anxiety and stress. The emotional roller coaster of love goes on throughout people’s lives and it is given and received in many different ways. There is a saying “ Love makes the world go around”. It is true. Imagine if love were not an emotion. What would you feel towards your family members, loved ones, children or spouse? It is a difficult question to answer and shows that love is an essential component in human relationships. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is very much in love with his wife Elizabeth.
They have children and a home together and are great partners in life. They are fiercely loyal to each other with the exception of John’s affair with Abigail. While John has feelings for Abigail they are more feelings of lust. On the other hand, Abigail really has genuine feelings for John. Even though, John has an affair with Abigail, Elizabeth still stays by his side. She stays by his side even though he had an affair with Abigail, because she feels that it was her fault that he cheated on her. She thought that she didn’t give him enough attention, that's why he has an affair with Abigail. John feels guilt and breaks it off with Abigail, because he loves his wife very much. The complex relationship between this husband, wife, and lover demonstrates how people love and show their love in very different

In Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin, the love between husband is not prominent. Even though, when Mrs. Mallard had found out about the death of her husband, she had a feeling of joy and happiness. She wanted to start her life over again and not have to worry about having a husband. Mrs. Mallard wanted to do things that she did not have the chance to do when she did not have a husband. Although, Mrs. Mallard loved her husband very much. She just wanted to have more freedom and do what she wants. Without, having to be told whether to do it or not.
In Desiree’s Baby, by Kate Chopin, the love that Desiree and her husband Armond have is strong. They fell in love quickly and hard. They both love each other very much, until Desiree has their baby. As the baby grows older, his skin starts to get darker. When Armond finds out that Desiree is mixed he leaves her. He leaves her because if he was to be seen with a mixed baby, then it could ruin his reputation that he has. So when Armond leaves, Desiree takes her and their baby and move somewhere else. Armond goes back to the house and goes through all of Desiree's things that she left behind. When he starts going through her things and burning them, he finds papers saying that he is actually mixed not his wife. Even though, Armond loves Desiree, he leaves her because he feels ashamed of accusing her for being mixed.
Love is an emotion, a feeling, an instinct, that can bring a person happiness, sadness, jealousy, and anger. Love can make you act in a productive, positive way or a destructive, negative way. Love is a necessary label for an emotion that can bring out the best or the worst in people. Love is a theme throughout American Literature that explores the many faces of love.
