This phrase " beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" was written by Shakespeare, the famous author of many good classical English novels and literature. Anybody who read English literature should know who Shakespeare is, otherwise , he will look very foolish.
What is the meaning of this phrase ? It simply means that the perception of beauty is different for different people. There is a similar Chinese saying " Each type of flower attracts different admirers. For example, some people like rose ,some like sunflower , some like cactus and many more.
In our current generation and in certain countries, slim girls are deemed to be beautiful but in other countries and cultures, plum girls are considered to be more beautiful. So, one man's food is another man's poison under different cultures ,religion or race. There is no such thing as absolute beauty in every body's eyes.
Our perception of beauty have been influenced by our education, our family electronic medias , magazines and most of all , through advertisement. If you look at advertisements in the newspaper or magazine and on TV, the producers used slim shape models to advertise their products. Hence, the Establishment happens to define what is beauty in our mind and our expectation.Like in mantra chanting, a constant repetition of a certain image depicting what is beauty will form our understanding and vision in our mind.
In our daily example, we frequently see odd couples whereby the lady is slim and beautiful while the man is the opposite ,which we deeded as fat and ugly but they are a loving couple. There could be some special relations in the relationship but sometimes, what we see as ugly is beautiful to the opposite sex. Just like the classic film " Beauty and the Beast ". Their loving attraction is strong and firm while their relationship is full of love and care.
