BEAUTY IS NOT ABOUT THE BOOTY 2 “In February 2007, the American Psychological Association released a report on the sexualization of girls that found that girls ' exposure to hypersexualized media content can negatively impacts their cognitive and emotional development; is strongly associated with eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression; leads to fewer girls pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and causes diminished sexual health” (Henson, 2011). This report concludes the statement that over sexualizing is harmful to a young girl. Glitz beauty pageants put all of these things into action and can put a child’s innocents in danger. They put images of what perfection is in a young ladies mind that are not obtainable to the human body, a wrong view on what perfection for a person truly is. Glitz beauty pageants are harmful to a young girl ego. Young ladies should not be flaunted like they are something that can be bought at a store, or like they are some typed of half-dressed trophies. The children in glitz pageants are forced to dress a certain way to “get the attention on them”; this is teaching these young ladies that to get someone’s attention it is easier to show off your body rather than make conversation or show a simple smile. “In what was likely a misguided effort to gin up publicity and ratings for the show, TLC released footage of a 3-year-old contestant dressed as the prostitute played by Julia Roberts in the 1990 film "Pretty Woman." This stupidity came just one week after TLC -- still known to many as The Learning Channel -- was forced to pull its Facebook page because of the deluge of negative comments over an episode that featured a little girl dressed up to look like Dolly Parton, complete with padded bust and buttocks” (Henson, 2011).
